Fathers Day
Happy Father's Day.

The most important job of all.

I know many of you take it very seriously, and those who coach sometimes play father to some of the boys who need that positive image in their lives.

My father is gone, I do miss him often, although as I age I sometimes see him looking back at me from the mirror in the morning. I loved the simple things like just playing catch with him.

RE: Fathers Day
Typically school ends before Fathers Day, so while most teachers do Mothers Day projects they don't usually do Fathers Day. School ended late enough this year to recognize FD.

My wife did a FD project in her room. She had several kids come to her telling her they'd never met their dad, or dad is in prison, or I have more than one dad, etc., so what should I do? She handled it, but you get the dilemma.

Point being dads are very important to a child's development. Hopefully they are more than a sperm donor.

RE: Fathers Day
Andrew Heller (Flint JOURNAL-MLive) had great column today about differences between "Fathers" and "Dads."

Told our kids Friday at workout to make sure they tell Dad they love him on Sunday June 15 - you never know when you won't get another chance.

My adoptive dad died in 1983 at 64 when I was 29.

Was Lieutenant Commander in Navy, professor at WMU among many other things.

But what he was best at was being a human being. Just a really, really good person in every respect - including being a dad (although I didn't fully appreciate it growing up).

Don't want to think about where I'd be without him.

RE: Fathers Day
I spent Father's Day with my dad for the first time since 2008. It was great to spend the weekend with him and my mother. Thanks, dad, for never threatening to pull me out of school or make me move home back in the day. Allowing me to play hockey was great, too.

RE: Fathers Day
My dad started me playing golf. He bought me a set of clubs from Goodwill and cut them down to fit me. He used electric tape for the grips. I was hooked.

On my 11th birthday he took me golfing on a course my uncle had built (used to be his farm). That night he died.... totally unexpected. My memories of him are always good, but his passing changed my life. Like BC I feel lucky that I ended up educated and successful. Luckily I had some good role models, because I had plenty of bad ones who could have sent me down the road to destruction.

My dad taught me the value of education. At 16 in lied about his age, quit school and joined the Navy. His fleet sailed through a hurricane with Admiral Bull Hallsy sp. He finished school after leaving the Navy and took night classes to further his education. He worked his way up at Clark Fork Lift to become an engineer, even though he had no engineering degree.

He taught me how to be frugal. He built our first house by tearing down to other houses and using the lumber to build ours. My brother and parents lived in an 800 square foot house while he built our house on weekends and after work. Took him nearly two years to finish it.

He got scrap aluminium from work and welded it to make our pontoon boat which we had on the Big Muskegon for ten years.

He bought one new car in his life, and could fix anything that could go wrong with them.

He thought credit (charge cards back then) were a communist plot. Might have been on to something............

Didnt have him long, and never realized I was learning life lessons from him, but when they're gone and you look back on it, you do.
