It was about the right size then, in a better neighborhood and had no Bear Bryant statue in front of it. I'll take it.

Beat me to it.

The present "bad neighborhood" has only been in its present demographics since about 1970. Before that time, Elyton Village apartments was a major married housing facility for the UA medical school. My wife and her first husband lived there when he first entered medical school in the mid60s as did many older doctors around metro B'ham today. My former stepfather in law lived three houses down 4th Street West from the sleeping lions in the 70s, and we used to park free in his yard for games. "White flight" had a lot to do with the later changes in those demographics in that area.

That 1931 picture showed Legion Field with only the east stands (up to row 30) which were built in 1926. The west stands (also up to row 30) were built a year or so later. Does anyone know what festivities are being planned for celebrating the centennial birthday of Legion Field in 2026 (if an MPF is not built by then to make it totally obsolete and disposable)?

why would anyone know what's planned for Legion Field's birthday 12 years from now?

I imagine LF will always be there in some form as a historic landmark. Perhaps the stadium itself will be demolished, at some point, with the field itself(minus the turf?) still there...

That will be one of the major players in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Birmingham.

Why would there be a plan for a stadium no one gives a damn about's birthday twelve years from now? Especially given that the damn thing will highly likely be a vacant lot by then?

If nothing is done to alter the reality of today in 2014, UAB will be playing its 2026 home games right there - like it or not - right after the system BOT announces the 19th consecutive tuition increase for both campuses - like they did for the 7th consecutive year today.

I meant the question facetiously, but not entirely hypothetically.

I suspect it will be a vacant lot as suggested above. I will celebrate the date by flushing a toilet at the Dome and giving a seven flush salute.
