How about this format for a 16-team P5 tournament?
Double elimination regionals followed by semifinal and final rounds each made up of best-of three series. A champion would win seven games. Exciting, no?

RE: "So called P5" can't leave NCAA/form new division
That 16-team tournament would be like four rounds of the final four. Getting a spot (just 16 for the 65 teams) would be very difficult. The regular season's interest would then skyrocket (whereas its currently very ho-hum).
All regular season conference champs get a bid. =5
All conference tourney champs get a bid. =maybe 5, or less if a regular season champ also wins conference tourney.
At-large bid chosen by selection committee. = 6 minimum.
It would change March Madness quite a bit...but I think it would GREATLY benefit the P5 basketball teams' popularity.

RE: "So called P5" can't leave NCAA/form new division
Or, you could have a 32-team field with a sort-of double elimination format:
Eight 4-team regionals. Play it like a double-elimination 4-team bracket, as in the NCAA baseball tournament, except that you don't play the championship game(s) in the regional -- you just advance the winner's bracket winner to the next round as a #1 seed and the loser's bracket winner to the next round as a #2 seed. That leaves 16 teams for a Sweet 16 single-elimination bracket. Each #1 winner of a regional is paired against the #2 from a different regional in the Sweet 16 round.

In some cases yes, but for most part the answer is no. A dozen or more of those teams will have less than 5 wins.

But if the P5 broke away entirely, they would want to take the rest of FBS and the pick of the non-FB conferences with them to set up a BBall conference to eclipse the NCAA tournament ...
... and with all of those schools in the new organization, it'd likely get recognized as being as in the same tax category as the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA or AIAW.

Correct, which means NEITHER will happen. They can NOT form Division 4 without the rest of the NCAA allowing them to by vote. And if they can NOT form Division 4 then they also can NOT breakaway from the NCAA which is their only other option because of the tax exempt status they'd take a 30% revenue haircut. Thus why I've been saying for weeks that Delaney and Slive are helpless idiots who are threatening and pouting to the media desperately.
Beg to disagree. These institutions would not loose their exempt status, because all the revenues are spent on other expenses within the institution (i.e. other sports), making them non-profit, and consistent with their their stated (IRS) mission. But they could have to leave the NCAA to form their own 'association'. It destroys the basketball tournament, which is why they would not do it.

I'm no fan of the way the organization has gone, but it's absurd to say that the colleges are tax-exempt in the NCAA but not outside of it. There are no share holders here to make money. All the money is going back to the schools to fund the athletic department and promote the school.
If you want to alter how that's set-up there's a discussion to be had, but within or outside the NCAA makes zero difference.

The underdog will be a once a decade, if that much, phenomenon. More than likely you will have the same group of around 20 teams competing for the 16 spots. Also basketball is not football, less than half of those huge fanbases are interested in college baskeball and they most certainly won't bring entire states to watch them.

Man, that's a heinous case of denial you got there. But, the good news is that aTm basketball will assuredly make the SEC better at basketball. LOL I'm sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face.

I don't think I've EVER stooped to personal attacks on this board before, BUT...
Whenever I read your posts, I think that you must have been the happiest aTm fan of all when they moved to the SEC. YOU seem to fit in SOOOOOO well with their fanbases. TYPICAL SELF RIGHTEOUS ***HOLE!!

I just point out the G5 hypocrisy.
You all pretend like you're standing up for "fairness" and "everything thats right with college sports"
when really you're all just terrified about one thing and one thing only: $$$$$$$$$$$$$
If all you really cared about was purity of competition, you would have joined FCS to play in their "real" tournaments. But you didn't because you wanted access to the big $$$$$$$$$$$
If the P5 leaves, you lose access to the big $$$$$$$$$$
So just be honest and come out and say it: "We really dont want the P5 to leave because if they do, our bottom lines are screwed"

A P5 fan lambasting G5 about being greedy. That's a hoot. Play that card anytime you want.

You act like you are personally getting a check from the SEC because aTm is in it. Do G5 fans want see their schools succeed? Of course we do. You'd have to be retarded or an Aggie fan to think otherwise. What G5 schools/fans want is equal consideration to the post-season and just an equal shot at the national championship. Not a free ride, or a handout. Just equal consideration for our conference champions.
UCF's season last year is the perfect example why any/all conference champions should have a vehicle to the playoffs. But you speak to us as if we are the interlopers, when in fact you and your type (dimwitted P5 fans) are the ones that are scared that you might have to share the pie. You don't want fair competition. You want biased rules and biased media support to falsely prop up your sh!tty "elite" institutions, while you continually run interference on G5 programs that just want to compete at the highest level. Who's the greedy ones? The P5 schools are. Who's the cowards? You're smart (for a redneck), you figure it out.
So go ahead and deflect, and snip at the edge of the subject, as you always do, and avoid answering the mail. Everyone here knows your opinion is compromised by your blind support of an inbred system. I hope karma kicks you in the nuts for it.

RE: "So called P5" can't leave NCAA/form new division
You show up late, contribute nothing and then demand an equal slice of the pie. That truly is the definition of "fairness"
Most of the P5 has put in over 100 years of equity into their programs and conferences so spare me the lecture.
The NCAA is not the US department of college sports, It a club.
If the P5 decide they want their own club where they don't have to share a damn thing with the johnny come latelies and small schools then thats exactly what they will do.
All you can do is sit there and cry about how you think you are ENTITLED to be in the same club as the P5 is when the truth is, no, no you are not.

My guess is that the G5 fans would let the P5 keep all the money over simple travel expenses under the condition that the playoff was 10 teams with each conference champ receiving an AQ slot. My guess is that the P5 fans would reject that option---which would reveal the real hypocrisy....
