I suggested something like this about two years ago. I think a lot of people probably thought my idea was Communist, but I don't really think sports are much fun without some degree of forced wealth-sharing.

If you're counting on Congress to do something, you're REALLY desperate

"Big-time schools can't leave; Congress would take away tax preferences and remove federal assistance. If they leave, now they're not a nonprofit. They're hiding behind the skirts of the rest of the NCAA institutions."

Bingo. That's what many on this board have said throughout the years.

Yep schools are Tax Exempt under the NCAA Umbrella and not the individual school.

And truth is its only 5-7 schools that are pushing for this and only 8-12 schools could survive the way they want it. And only 5-6 could win more than they lose.

You don't hear Presidents or ADs from Indiana, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Kansas and Wake Forest talking about what Mike Slive and Nick Saban want. And that's because they know the majority of them can't do it. And the majority don't want to do it.

I'm not counting on ****, but "desperate" is probably fair.

Counting on congress? Do you think the congressmen from Alabama could get re-elected if they voted against something Saban wants? California representatives are going against the whole PAC-12? And so on.

Add it up. The P5 is well represented in congress.Since the P5 is in populous states, they may even have the numbers.

Don't count on congress.

They don't have to be able to pass anything. Threats will work and a single Representative can make the P5 existence hell.

You know, laws have actually been enacted without the consent of the State of Alabama before. I mean, usually we all just go along with whatever people in Alabama say, since it's worked so well for them... but occasionally, we march to the beat of our own drummer. An example: not every Mother's Day has to be spent at Golden Corral. Heresy, I know; but where would we be without free thinkers?

Of course it is not just Alabama. Think you can win without votes from Bama and Texas and Michigan and Ohio and California and Florida and all the other states in which the reps have a vested interest in the P5? I don't think so.
