"I trust my coaches decisions until he starts losing a bunch of games, then I'll pretend I thought it was a bad idea all along. :) "

If there was ever a statement that says what most fans believe this is it right here. :)

It's not like all of these freshmen will be starting. Some of them will definitely be game ready while others will need time backing up the starters.

I think the true game-time experience they will get with a few snaps will be crucial. I think the potential is there to develop more as a true freshman rather than a RS freshman because you KNOW there's a chance of you actually getting into the game so the attention you give practice and training is greater.

Who knows, this plan could crash and burn and I understand its a necessary evil for this year at least having minimal depth in some positions, but I wonder if it will REALLY have that significant of an impact in the long run.

I also think true sophomores play better than redshirt freshmen...but there is a definite drawback to not redshirting.

Example...Jerick McKinnon. Would've been real nice to have him this year, but we needed him to be a backup to Jaybo Shaw.

Not redshirting makes sense for us at least for this year, so for now I won't complain.

It's about playing the best players you have available first, then class balancing. Class balancing is always tough to handle because of attrition, Junior College, transfers, etc... You just can't really get a pulse on that. You play your best athletes. It doesn't matter if their RS Seniors or True Freshmen.

RE: Not redshirting any true freshmen for the first year in FBS
I think the biggest factors playing a role in this decision is the shift in our offense scheme as well as lack of defensive depth. If Fritz was from the traditional 3-O offensive philosophy, perhaps we'd have more red-shirting going on this year. You could see from his first recruiting class that he seeks different type players at OL, RB and TE than we've got on our roster. For the defense, we're seriously depleted along the DL and DB due to graduation, grades and kids not keeping their nose clean during the off-season. We're going to need those kids we signed this year just to fill out the depth chart with more than walk-ons. So getting as many of those true-freshmen as possible on the field this next year will be crucial to future depth.

I'd expect to see this type of thinking to continue for a couple of years for that same reason. Then after a couple of years, perhaps we can start taking more luxuries of redshirting.

Depends on the position you watch. A RS senior is usually much better on the OLine (especially inside) and the DLine and secondary, than a true senior.

The point of redshirting at the FBS level is more to steal an extra year of eligibility from a player that might normally play very little than it is trying to train the player.

Occasionally you see a few get redshirted to bulk up for a position change.

Unless you are an elite school that gets nothing but 4 and 5 star athletes, red shirting most of your class is best. This is the 1st year since the early 2000s I feel we could red shirt the entire class and be OK. Although Im sure there is going to be that one or 2 recruits that blow someone away at fall camp and they will get to play.
