Kickoff Discussion #3: Bethune Cookman @ FIU
is it possible to have a "must-win" game as the first game of the season? If so, I suspect this is the one that most matters for a C-USA team in determining how the rest of the season might go. Unfortunately, history isn't on the Golden Panthers' side.

Bethune-Cookman @ FIU is the kind of in-state game I personally like to see if you really MUST schedule an FCS game. It's certainly more interesting as a game for fans than a game against some FCS team from several states away, like...I don't know...Rhode Island. So congratulations to FIU for having a home and home with B-C, who is from Daytona Beach for those of you not from Florida.

B-C was a playoff team last year and looks loaded again. Plus they beat the Panthers 34-13 last year, so revenge might play a role from FIU's perspective. But FIU needs to get something going early to have a chance at a decent season. I think Turner will eventually turn things around in Miami, but it has to start somewhere. With Wagner in the game following this one, a 2-0 start might do some real good for FIU. But I think they are going to have to approach this game as a "must-win" game to get the ball rolling. There aren't many winnable games after the first two, but with a little luck in this game to gain confidence, it might be possible to get to 4 wins.

Returning 18 players (9 on each side) might be enough to allow the team to gel, but I think this is the game that will tell how the season will go.

FIU opens with two home games. The second game is against Wagner and is clearly winnable. But if the Panthers are going to win two or more games this year, I think they are going to have to beat Bethune-Cookman. Because it is a home game, I give FIU a fighting chance, but in the end, I don't think they beat a good B-C team that is the defending MEAC champion, returns 12 starters including an experienced quarterback, and is picked to finish at No. 23 in the SI.com preseason FCS poll.

Unfortunately, I see the Panthers losing their home opener.

I think the Kitties will take B-C this time. That loss last year HAS to be burning in the back of thier mind.

Just for reference, Wagner (a terrible scheduling idea, imo, given the opening with another FCS team) was 3-8 last year. But they may be what FIU needs to help right the ship.

BCU *and* Wagner?! Well BCU was good last year, so... FIU surely has improved. I think they will win by less than 7 this time around.

Bethune-Cookman's no joke. They've developed a consistently strong program over the past few years. I don't expect the result from last season, but I could definitely see them winning and making a decent run in the FCS playoffs. FIU's approach can't be "well, they got us last year so this is our destined revenge" but rather "these guys are real and we have to get up for this".

I expect a close, fun game.

This game could go either way. FIU has tons of problems. BCU is good, but they are still D1AA. With a year under their belt, and an offseason. I think FIU wins a close one. They just need to pray BCUs coach doesn't have any eligibility left. 05-stirthepot

A BC coach is a Marshall alum and regular poster for several years on one of our boards so we hear a lot about them. They have taken in some high quality g5 and p5 transfers. It will be a strong test for FIU.

I predict FIU will end up with the same record as last year. Except their one win will be Wagner instead of a FBS school. I don't know what happened at FIU but I'll never understand why they fired Cristobal. Their current coach is not the answer.

I certainly agree that the result of this game against a very good FCS team in B-C, will help dictate how the season will go for our Panthers.

Unfortunately, I still expect another long season before.....hopefully....turning things around.

I hate to say it would be an upset if FIU wins but that's kind of how it looks - a pre-season Top 25 B-C versus the (USA Today) #129 team in FBS... all the makings for a REALLY good game. Hope you guys can pull out the W.
