Park land ,,,where is it located

I think he's talking about the land underneath Legion Field.

thank :)

The entire park extends many blocks from the western edge of the parking area (where there is a fire station and houses on the west side of a street) to several blocks east of the stadium. The stadium itself is on only a small portion of the total park land. Drive by on Graymont Ave. sometimes and note the streets it encompasses between 5th Ave (Graymont) and 8th Ave - which diverge east of the stadium to take in more presently vacant land. A lot can be built on that relatively level land at a minimum cost.

I would estimate that the total land area of the whole park is not a lot smaller (if at all) than the UAB undergrad campus (I'm not including any of the medical center) footprint between 8th and 10th Ave. south today.

UAB has land it doesn't know what to do with, now. Land contiguous to the current campus.

No, they'll keep patching up LF until something better is built or it falls down, but it still sucks.

HBCU games tend to do very well in Atlanta. Keep in mind that there are Magic City Classic billboards and commercials in the Atlanta area every year due to the amount of alums and fans of the two schools that live in the area such as myself. The Atlanta Football Classic which was between Tennessee State/FAMU would draw between 50,000-60,000 people every year to the dome. Since then the matchup has changed to North Carolina A&T vs. South Carolina State and in their first year in the game last year they drew about 42,000. Now those numbers were lower than the previous match-up with TSU/FAMU but those two schools had a history of 20+ years of playing in Atlanta. Atlanta has a strong HBCU alumni base and the city is very interested in bringing in more HBCU match-ups to the city. Right now ASU/AAMU are only interested in continuing to play in Birmingham. Atlanta made an offer but the two schools have signed a lengthy extension to keep the game in Birmingham. Right now the Birmingham Chapter of 100 Black Men are working with Tennessee State and Florida A&M to play at Legion Field since they no longer play in Atlanta. 100 Black Men also puts on the Atlanta Classic and the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis.

You are correct bud. I hope Birmingham keeps the Classic though.

Sucking the enjoyment of watching football by putting it into a cavernous indoor facility is too high a price to make it comfortable for literal fair weather fans to be comfortable for any possible December games

a dome would increase attendance and improve recruiting. better recruiting leads to more wins. that leads to even better attendance. if we can start drawing 25-30k fans we have a much better chance of making money on sports and moving up the conference food chain.

UAB can still make money off parking by providing parking and busing from campus to the dome. they can even set up on campus tailgating areas by the soccer field for a fee which includes parking in the nearby lot and bus service to and from the game. you get alums back on campus and income. you set up a family fun zone on the campus green. you charge for the off campus parking and have buses running from the parking area to the campus green, the tailgate area, and then the dome.

Tailgating away from the venue = terrible idea.

you cant tailgate in a parking deck. if you don't have an on campus facility you have to think outside the box. one of the main reasons you want an OCS is to get alums back on campus. You want to reinforce the ties alums have for the university so they are more likely to give. sure tailgating away from the site is not ideal but if you dont have an on campus facility and the facility you do have can not provide a game day experience you got to do something different.

I could see "The Classic" in ATL. I could also see the C-USA Football and Basketball championships in B'ham if this is built.

UAB vs Mississippi State 2004. The UAB parking and tailgate area was so far away from the stadium they provided bus transportation. We had a catered tent and the mood before the game was fantastic. Why? Because we were 3-1 with wins over Baylor, Memphis, and Cincinnati. We didn't care that we had to ride a bus for five minutes to get to the stadium. Taking a bus to a game if the product is good is nothing. Its a hell of a lot better than walking a mile in the heat in Athens GA because you CANT PARK NEAR THE STADIUM. When we played Florida State in 2004 we rode a bus from the parking area to the game. THATS TWO UNIVERSITIES WITH ON CAMPUS STADIUMS THAT YOU HAD TO RIDE A BUS TO GET TO THE GAME. Taking a bus from the campus green to the dome is not a big deal and a hell of a lot better than having to walk a mile two from your hotel to the game.

+1

In Tallahassee we tailgated at the civic center and took the shuttle bus to the game. Had a great time. It can work very well.

One of the few appealing things about the old grey broad is being able to tailgate in the shadow of the stadium.

Sue me.

This is true - as soon as we demolish the buildings now on the sites UAB owns and may be collecting rent for their use. The park land I am talking about is largely vacant and can be built on as soon as UAB receives the title to it. When the MPF is finally built, the city will have little use for the park and UAB can probably cut a good deal since the city wants UAB to grow - perhaps into a major national university in fields other than just medicine.

It is also true that as long as UAB continues the small town university model that AU and UA have followed from the 20th century, and under the cover of "high academic standards" keeps its enrollment below 20,000, we probably don't need more land. If I am correct and the 21st century is the time of the big urban universities (USF and UCF for instance), UAB will run short of space even if it razes every building it owns on the southside..

Could Linn Park be a drop-off point and tailgate link between the Campus Green and the Dome?

Park at the UAB campus, tailgate on the Green, hop on the bus, drop off at Linn Park for more tailgating, and walk to the Dome? The convention center (assuming the Dome is built to the north-east of it) will likely be connected to the Dome by an air-conditioned walkway, perhaps even one of those airport-style conveyor belts) so you just walk in and breeze through to your seat.

Tell you what: If UAB buys the land Legion Field currently occupies, I'll buy you a Coke.

So this is my question, do you think there is a chance that birmingham could get both the MPF and a new stadium for UAB or do you guys think its a one or the other type deal?

I think a dome kills whatever impetus we have to build an OCS.

A certain BOT member said doing the earlier OCS debate/discussion that he was waiting on the city to build the dome...

You can't kill something that is already dead.

FWIW...the mayor used the Final Four (pipe dream) as justification for the proposed seating capacity of 45,000-55,000.

For his honor's information the NCAA currently requires 60,000 seats minimum to host in addition to 1,000 hotel rooms in close proximity to the venue.
