UAB vs Mississippi State 2004. The UAB parking and tailgate area was so far away from the stadium they provided bus transportation. We had a catered tent and the mood before the game was fantastic. Why? Because we were 3-1 with wins over Baylor, Memphis, and Cincinnati. We didn't care that we had to ride a bus for five minutes to get to the stadium. Taking a bus to a game if the product is good is nothing. Its a hell of a lot better than walking a mile in the heat in Athens GA because you CANT PARK NEAR THE STADIUM. When we played Florida State in 2004 we rode a bus from the parking area to the game. THATS TWO UNIVERSITIES WITH ON CAMPUS STADIUMS THAT YOU HAD TO RIDE A BUS TO GET TO THE GAME. Taking a bus from the campus green to the dome is not a big deal and a hell of a lot better than having to walk a mile two from your hotel to the game.

Dang, I was at both those games, and my wife and I walked to the stadium! It was a long walk, but I didn't know about any bus!

I was at every one of those games mentioned and he is 100% correct. That said I walked at Starkville and it was a long walk.

At Tennessee we tailgated in the hotel and walked over a mile to the game. At Ohio State we rode a bus to the game from the parking area over two miles. The three bus rides at FSU were LONG from the Civic Center.

Bottom line is if it is built we will play in it. Our options will be Hoover, Lawson Field, or our Soccer field because Legion Field will be torn down. If everyone is so dead set against the Dome then call Brian Mackin and pledge money to an OCS. Once we raise half the money we can build it.

Not fussing but just saying time to wake up to the reality of the situation. It would be a tremendous shot in the arm for UAB and position us for the next round of expansion. Right now UAB is about to announce facilities upgrades across the board in August so get ready to open your bank accounts because they will be calling every one of us for money.

Locker room improvements are under way and the next round of improvements will be on that agenda.

Which games today are granted priority when UAB is finalizing its full schedule? Working with the city and the MPF should be no different.

What if, for instance, in April UAB has a game scheduled for a Saturday in Oct. for the MPF, but ESPN comes along in the summer and offers a Thursday slot on national TV if we will agree to move from that Sat.? We would want the city to help us by making whatever possible accommodations needed to do this. That is what PARTNERS IN PROGRESS do to help each other.

If B'ham has a major national convention scheduled for a particular weekend? UAB would be expected to work around that weekend by scheduling an away game. Aren't such major conventions scheduled at least a year in advance? It would seem to me to be a workable problem if UAB & B'ham are speaking with respect to each other regularly.

Most large conferences are scheduled at least a year in advance, however very few of our football games are. Meaning, the availability of a dome might dictate when we can play. I seriously doubt they would block off the entire football season to wait until we get a schedule worked out.

Generally we have no idea about our football schedule until the conference office announces it. It's not like we can negotiate it with the city in advance. We need them to cooperate with us, and we also need a bit of respect if we're going to be the anchor tenant, the one who schedules the most events in that facility every year.

Mayor Bell has specifically said he will talk to the "Board of Trustees" regarding UAB and the MPF. He has also been on a B'ham promotional tour of NYC with President Watts around the same time these comments were made... if the facility is built, we will be playing there because it is beneficial for the city and UAB, based on what Watts and Bell have been preaching.

Looking over the comment from "the people" after John Archibald's column, you see certain main themes. "All politicians are crooks" (even though we elected them - again - and again); No investments should be made to build the central city; if the "dome" has no sports use, it would be a waste of money (it's like they have never heard of business conventions); is there an unspoken fear that "foreigners"(those from outside Alabama or the South) might spread their foreign ideas among our own people?

Ask "the people" for a list of things / projects "the people" want the city / county to build, repair, renovate, expand or add to existing offerings and they will overload you with their wish lists which involve heavy spending by the various governments. Ask them to pay for these desired things with taxes on them, and they will give you only dirty looks - certainly you won't get their votes. They seem at times to believe that all municipal services(fire, police, streets and sanitation, etc.) "just come into being" as though through magic with no costs.

Try to build a MPF which might increase tax revenues paid by visitors, and they can't even imagine such a thing being built in B'ham. If it doesn't involve football as the main "game", they can't imagine that either.

I must say that after reading that article , I am not any more optimistic about the MPF than before. Not one area mayor was quoted other than Mayor Bell and we already know he is on board. Major projects like MPFs in any cities require area financial support, not silence. They also require support by their state to at least NOT hobble the efforts needed to build any large MPF. To date, the past and present governors have essentially given the metro area suburbs a veto of anything of size to be built in B'ham by saying that "all (metro) parties must speak with one voice". Did that article mention any voice other than Bell's?.

I'd imagine that among the local governments, it's about like that scene from Stripes when they're all standing in line & the Sgt asked all who did it to step forward & you saw many move acting like they were going to step but as soon as someone did actually step forward no one else did & they're left holding the bag.

What our readers are saying: Both UAB and Birmingham could benefit from a domed stadium
