Future Taliban Plan
Future Taliban plan......
... TAKE NO PRISONERS, SO WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE FIVE JUST RELEASED, DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.

The law enforcement officer at Ft. Hood still rings in my ears. She didn't kill the Dr. Hassan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nidal_Malik_Hasan

and he collects pay while awaiting court procedures.

Don't bring in any Taliban prisoners. KILL 'EM ON SIGHT

Absolutely. They should never touch any territory that falls under US law.

That will work too. Just don't bring them in and put them in a holding cell somewhere.

In the case of Hasan, he was caught in the act and had killed some number of people already. He should have been shot and killed on the spot. The officer missed and hit him where he was only paralyzed and is still around today, going through the court procedures on and on and on. I bet he might even be given life or some lesser sentence. He should be off the planet NOW.

More U.S. soldiers will die, because all the Taliban will fight to the death, since they'll know that we kill prisoners. And, none of our soldiers will be able to surrender, because they will be killed.

Why in the hell would our soldiers surrender to the Taliban? You know, unless they want to be promoted?

We can abandon all the rules and fight just like the other guys do but then we would be no better than they are.

We must maintain the moral high ground.

We must maintain the moral high ground.

Then we must never fight, because we can do no better than a quagmire.

That's the conundrum. By self-imposing what we consider to be the high moral ground, we cannot win against an enemy who doesn't, in the context of a culture that does not define the high moral ground the way we do. I do not see how an approach that is guaranteed to produce Vietnam/Afghanistan/Iraq-style quagmires can legitimately be considered "high moral ground." We are not going to win hearts and minds by adhering to "moral standards" that are viewed with contempt by those hearts and minds we are attempting to win, particularly when we try to claim some moral superiority for so doing.

I don't have a perfect answer. My own choice is that we fight only when we determine that the objective is so important that it's worth ceding some of that self-defined high moral ground in order to achieve. That may mean we never fight. If so, that's what it means.
