Sorry excuses for Tiger fans

Wednesday January 07, 2004

Without a doubt, many LSU fans who attended the Sugar Bowl were some of the crudest, crassest and most destructive people I've witnessed coming into our city.

As a native of Southern Louisiana and a French Quarter resident for more than 14 years, I have seen our streets filled with crowds for Super Bowls, Jazzfests and Mardi Gras. But I have never witnessed, on such a large scale, behavior that can only be described as animalistic, violent and criminal.

From Our Advertiser

Many neighbors and I experienced LSU fans screaming chants and profanities at all hours, beating on parked cars and street signs, knocking over trash cans, urinating in public, banging on our windows and ringing our doorbells into the early morning hours.

The pinnacle of my disgust came when I witnessed a horde of screaming Tiger fans on a Royal Street balcony pelting an elderly gentleman with beads, beer cans and anything else they could throw. The gentleman's offense: He was wearing an Oklahoma T-shirt.

Yes, these fans have something they can certainly be proud of: being ranked as some of the sorriest excuses for human beings.

Don't know why the people of NO were surprised at THEIR university's fans. They didn't do anything the rest of us could have predicted.
