Walmart in ND Paying $17/hr +
http://dailysignal.com/2014/06/10/drilli...7-40-hour/

Quote:A Walmart store in Williston, N.D., is offering to pay entry-level workers as much as $17.40 per hour—nearly 2½ times the federal minimum wage—in an effort to compete in one of America’s most dynamic labor markets.

Lesson learned... real competition is good.

My barber left Sport Clips here to go up there a year or so ago. She got $85,000 as a barber. Her boyfriend was up there driving a truck for Halliburton. They had to wait until they could find a place to live. Finally found a farmer that had a pad that he would let them put a mobile home on, with utilities. They bought the mobile home here to save a ton of money, and Halliburton let the BF borrow a rig to tow it up with.

New York City has some of the highest salaries/wages in the country. They also have some of the highest rents and property values which can make those high wages not high enough.

I would like to know if a bar of soap in a ND Walmart is the same price as in a Walmart in Mississippi.

It's like the 1849 California Gold Rush.

When I was last there it was no different than GA. The differences between NYC, LA and ND are demand and scarcity. Few actually want to live in ND, which drives up salaries but because land is plentiful in that area, it keeps housing and material prices down.

Housing in ND is outrageously expensive right now.

There is a huge shortage in housing.

There may be a lot of land, but the high salaries and low housing supply has pushed home prices to unreal levels. Rent in Williston, ND is more expensive on average than NYC...if you can find housing at all. As of February, rent from a one bedroom, 700 square foot apartment in Williston, ND was $2,400. That's almost double NYC prices.

Geez, can you imagine being someone who's lived in Williston their whole life and now there's this oil boom going on in your backyard? I'm sure anyone selling their land and moving down south for retirement is making a handsome profit.

I was staying near Garrison Dam so I didnt see the rents you describe. But Im not suprised by the rents if there is the artifical scaricity you describe.

I worked with a law firm up there for several years on a number of projects in the Williston Basin, pre-Bakken. The lawyers I worked with tell me it's totally crazy now.
