The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Dexter (first four seasons), The Americans are some great dramas and Louie, Wilfred, Veep, Parks and Rec (NBC show), The League, Archer are some great comedies. There has never been a better era of television where all episodes of everything are right at your disposal with Netflix and HBOGo.

If you're looking for family friendly sitcoms then you're stuck with crap. Although Bob's Burgers on Fox is a suprisingly heartfelt show (although a little crude) featuring a loving family that has moral lessons as well.

You forgot Prison Break, True Blood, DaVinci's Demons, and Salem is up and coming...

Can't stand True Blood personally. I tried, twice...couldn't go past the first two episodes. Vampires aren't my thing.

Also, Sherlock (the BBC one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) just released their third season to Netflix.

I forgot Walking Dead too. I'm not the biggest fan of it, but it's the most watched non network TV show out there.

It takes about 5 or 6 episodes to get into True Blood and then you're hooked... I'm highly addicted to The Walking Dead, DaVinci's Demons, and Salem, and I watched Prison Break three times on Netflix... I'm a sucker for supernatural stuff... I liked Heroes too, but that may have had a little to do with Hayden Panettiere.

Heroes had a fantastic Season 1...then the writer's strike absolutely killed it.

Yeah it seemed like they ran out of storyline around season 3 or 4... I can't remember which one because I would watch back to back on Netflix, but never finished it... True Blood does the same through season 3 or 4 but make a good comeback.

Yeah I pretty much agree with this post. Forgot about how good some of the FX shows have been.

I'm just getting into the 6th season of The Sopranos now, I'll have to check out Deadwood next.

The first season of Prison Break was awesome, but it went downhill from there.

I'm on Season 6 of The Sopranos too. I've been impressed with how the show continued to be great even into the sixth season and at one point with a two year break between episodes. Season 4 lagged for a bit, but once (Spoiler........) RS was killed it really picked back up with a bang.

I live in Baltimore so I am biased but The Sopranos is as close as any other show to The Wire....maybe I'll feel differently at the end though.

Hulu's throwback, and the reason I didn't follow through with signing up on it, is because they have commercials... BLAH...

The thread was talking more about family TV, but those shows you list are pretty good. I enjoy Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad (had a pretty good thread here leading up to the final episodes), and The Wire.

Haven't gotten the chance to touch up on Mad Men, Deadwood, or the Sopranos.

Well, imprisoning a man just so he can break another one out is definitely far-fetched, but the action and thrill of keeping you on the edge of your seat made it worth it to me... We can't forget that it's not real life. There aren't that many close calls in real life lol...

It is too bad that HBO didn't properly fund the fifth season of The Wire. I guess I can't blame them because the show was never really that popular, but I feel like David Simon deserved 13 episodes for the last season.

Another show that was quite good despite not having the popularity is Carnivale. Again, cut short too quickly, but at some point money talks more than quality, even for HBO.

In the 90's most of the shows had realistic premises: kids telling scary stories by a campfire(Are You Afraid of the Dark), the lives of friends from elementary school through college (Boy Meets World), a teacher in Oakland (Hangin' with Mr. Cooper), etc.

They also had pretty emotional/moral-based episodes concerning relationships, sex, drugs, death, etc. I don't know how revolutionary it was but they were certainly more prevalent than any other time that I know of.

I wonder what that says about those times.

Carnivale season 2 was a draaaaaaaaag, which is common for HBO shows. The Wire also had a bad season 2, but the difference is that The Wire's second season only had vague importance while Carnivale's was actually the ending to that part of the anthology.

Are there very many family shows on TV anymore? Modern Family is really the only one I can think of.
