I want to know who they chased down into the church. Hope they explain that.

I guess it's still too early to tell if the shooter turned the gun on himself or not, but this is ridiculous. What happened to honor, courage, etc? A name is the only thing we go into this world with that we also leave with.....if my name is associated with cowardice then I have failed as a person. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't change the horrors that they've done. I just don't get why people need to take the lives of others if they're going to commit suicide anyway.

I work directly with mental health and substance abuse clients. The move that started a few decades ago to "least restrictive environment" began the process of closing most mental health hospitals. Now we are faced with trying to make sure severly mentally ill people take medications as needed to function in society. It is a daunting task. Like most social service programs, the public does not want to pay for adequate services. Plus the mentally ill do not vote as a block. They are politically powerless therefor ignored until a tragedy strikes.
Expect more as the public insists on lower taxes

Do the mentally ill stop taking the medication on their own due to side effects, or perhaps just forget to take them? The guy that did the shooting at NIU was supposedly off his meds.

Both reasons. In the case of bipolars They like the high of the manic episode so they stop medications.
