Tulane hires Sam Houston State's David Pierce as it's next baseball coach.
Scott Kushner with the New Orleans Advocate is reporting that David Pierce from Sam Houston State was hired as Tulane's next baseball coach. He has taken Sam Houston to the top of the Southland Conference and to NCAA regionals. Also for 8 or 9 years he was a top assistant coach to legendary Wayne Graham at Rice. He is a graduate of the University of Houston, played baseball and coached there. Great hire as he is one of the up and coming young coaches in the nation and will put Tulane baseball back on the map. Aaron Fitt with Baseball America called David Pierce great and a perfect fit for Tulane as did Kendall Rogers with Perfect Game in recent posts on their Twitter accounts.

He has no interest in leaving ULL. We looked at SELAs coach but not a bite from ULLs

Lots of baseball America love.

Aaron Fitt @aaronfitt · 1h
Pierce is perfect fit for #Tulane. Proven he can win at a private school in Tulane's conference during days at Rice. Kept winning at SHSU.

Kendall Rogers @KendallRogersPG · 2h
I’m told @GreenWaveBSB will hire #SHSU HC David Pierce. As we reported he was the clear leader this week. Great hire. #Tulane

"I'd really like to thank the Sam Houston State community, university and athletic department, especially the baseball coaches, players and support staff," said Pierce. "My wife Susan and I are very excited to be coming to Tulane University to become a part of the Tulane family. I'd like to thank Dr. Scott Cowen and athletic director Rick Dickson for giving us this opportunity to come to New Orleans to be a part of this great institution. I know we have a lot to do in the next few days to secure and communicate to recruits and returning players that good times are ahead of us. Our intent is to come in and win now, and we are not only going to win on the playing field, but also in the community and in the classroom. I would like to finish my statement with one thing: Roll Wave."

You got a great coach and I absolutely wish Coach Pierce nothing but the best. Definitely a class act. We at SHSU knew he would be leaving us at the rate of success he was having but we thought for sure he was waiting for the Wayne Graham to retire. (or at least for one more year until is son graduates from Sam..) But I wonder if that's a problem you might have to worry about as well. I would have to think he would be the favorite for the Rice gig when it opens up.

A coach leaving's always a threat when you win.
Rice could be - but things change. See how C-USA baseball looks in 2 or 3 years. I'd fear Texas or Texas A&M more really. But I don't fear any of them. Any threat means he got us back on track; and we can hire/find good baseball coaches.

Nice!!!!!!!!

And, not to brag, but I CALLED IT!!!

As for leaving for Rice.. I doubt he'll leave for CUSA. The AAC will be an upper-tier baseball conference.. especially if/when ECU follows Tulane's and USF's great coaching hires..

This a good hire for TU. They had a stout program before Katrina. Looks American baseball is going to be a tough nut.

You sure did. You called it early. On paper, he's close to a perfect coach for us.

If he leaves, conference will have nothing to do with it. Coach Pierce was raised in Houston. He went to St. Pius high school in Houston, is a UH alum, and in addition to coaching for almost a decade at Rice he also coached and a few of the area high schools early in his career. If he goes back to Rice it'll be because he wants to go home. I do think however there is a good chance that he can make a home in NOLA and I agree that Tulane is a perfect fit for Coach Pierce and Tulane but you can't deny the ties he has in Houston.

Personally, I want him to stay at Tulane. We've built up a bit of a rivalry with Rice over the last few years and I wouldn't like Coach Pierce coaching against Sam 2-4 times a year.

Again, congrats on the hire! He's a good one and he's bringing along some great assistants. Just got word that assistant Sean Allen turned down an interview for SHSU HC gig and is following Pierce to Tulane.
