Teel Time: Assessing ACC's latest tax filings and record 2013-14 revenue
From thr article:

Now for the confusing areas.

While the filing and public disclosure of federal returns for tax-exempt 501©(3) enterprises such as college conferences lag a year behind the calendar, leagues such as the SEC and Big 12 have traditionally released current revenue figures during their annual spring meetings, a practice the ACC has resisted.

But last week the ACC told the Daily Press and ESPN.com that its revenue for 2013-14, the conference’s first with 14 football members and 15 (Notre Dame) for other sports, was a league-record $291.7 million, a big-time bump of 24 percent from just a year ago reflecting an enhanced contract with ESPN . That led some media to simply divide the $291.7 million by 14 and presume average per-school distributions of $20.8 million.

Such reports are misleading. Based on previous tax filings, the ACC returns about 90 percent of revenue to schools, a rate that would translate to average per-school distributions of approximately $18.8 million for 2013-14. Again, that amount does not include the championship pool money, which is calculated and awarded separately.

Each school’s exact cut for 2013-14 won’t be known for a year, when tax returns are filed. Notre Dame, like the ACC's other schools, will receive one-fifteenth of basketball television money -- the Fighting Irish have their own football arrangement with NBC and do not share in conference football TV dollars.

Estimating that amount is tricky, but Swofford has said that basketball produces about 20 percent of the league's television money. Translation: Notre Dame's share figures to be around 2.5 million.

SCHOOL SHARES FOR 2012-13

Florida State: $19.5 million

Clemson: $18.5M

Virginia Tech: $18.3M

Duke: $18.2M

N.C. State: $18.1M

Georgia Tech: $17.7M

North Carolina: $16.9M

Maryland: $16.8M

Virginia: $16.8M

Miami: $16.7M

Boston College: $16.7M

Wake Forest: $16.6M

Those 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 distributions tell you why there were some dissatisfied ACC members at the time. 2008-9 was higher and 2007-8 was only a half million below 2010-11.

There was an Orlando Sentinel blog 6/12/2013 detailing FSU's distribution, but the link wasn't working anymore. It said FSU got distributions of $18.3 million. However, in the detail (based on memory-don't have the article) there was something around $1.2 million of officials fees paid by the ACC that the ACC called "distributions." That would explain the difference between the $18.3 and $19.5 million.

It was a very informative article and it does highlight in the future the ACC needs to get the Network off the ground with ESPN to stay within range of the Pac 12, B1G and SEC in about 5 years.

This is the conspiracy theorist in me, but I believe the reason the ACC is playing a "slow" game right now with the ACC network is.....the Maryland lawsuit isn't resolved. Right now the ACC can claim Maryland's departure has somewhat hurt the ability to launch a network because of the loss of that TV market (in case the whole damages argument comes up). It would not suprise me one bit, after the case is resolved, then all of a sudden the network is back on.

I think the key point is that the ACC numbers are in range right now. There's always going to be a little noise in getting exact numbers, depending on timing, accounting styles, putting things in different distribution buckets (like the ACC does with the championship pool of money- I don't think any other conferences have this same sort of bucket).

As far as the product that is to be on the conference network in the future (the so called "tier 3" product), I do have one question since I don't live in the region. What is going on with that product right now? Is ESPN subleasing those tier 3 football and basketball games to local channels or regional networks, or is all on ESPN3, or is ESPN "warehousing" the product (to use an old term)? Right now, does the league get any "extra" revenue when that tier 3 content is broadcast, like it presumably will in the future with a conference network?

Quote:Maryland: $16.8M

The amount the ACC has held back from Maryland is about twice that number?

According to the Matt Sarz site: http://mattsarzsports.com/Contract/GameL...5XyInJdWSo

ESPN purchased essentially every game. A portion of what would be tier 2 inventory was sublicensed to Raycom which are branded as "ACC Network" and is around 30-35 games.

2 games appear on ESPNNews.

The last 14 games are all only available on ESPN3, an online affiliate of ESPN.

So an ESPN network would probably lean heavily on the 45-50 games that are either with Raycom or with ESPN3/ESPNNews now. They are being compensated for them right now in the ESPN contract or else ESPN would not have the rights to them in the first place.

I'm starting to think it's closer to 35 or 36 mil.

Those "last 14" games are carried on ESPN3 but not necessarily exclusively on ESPN3. A lot of them will be carried locally by various stations.
