One: And have it where?

Two: Why would the Dems afflict themselves that way?

I don't think he is one. The city, while blue, is in the heart of one of the most conservative areas in the country. Not to mention we don't have the facilities for it at all.

That being said if they want to come here, that would be a very cool and historic event. I believe it will be our first political convention

Let me get the jump on BAmanBlazerfan and point out that the first National Political convention held in Birmingham was the 1948 Dixiecrat Convention in which Strom Thurmond was nominated for President at What would later be called Boutwell Auditorium

When the Convention planners stop laughing maybe they will tell Birmingham where the deficiencies are in the proposal.

Are there any 4 or 5 star hotels in Birmingham? How about convention space for 35,000 ? Are there even 35000 hotel rooms in the metro area ?

Wow, and he did that without once mentioning The Bear, George Wallace, our under funding of schools, or the disparity of the have and have not schools athletic programs.

Nice.

Pretty much what Phil said.

It would be hugely good for Birmingham to have such an event here, if for no reason than getting hordes of media here to find no bombings, police dogs, water hoses, or segregated bathrooms. This city has made great strides and is becoming a more modern and liveable urban area than virtually any outsider would expect to find. Birmingham would get more good press in a weekend than it would usually get in years.

That said - hold it where? All we have is the BJCC, and it's old and dated. Events such as these are normally held in flashy new complexes with all the modern amenities. I sincerely doubt that the BJCC could meet the requirements for the cameras and internet access needed. Add in lacking the available number of hotel rooms and places to eat in close proximity to the event center, and you have all the ingredients for Highly Public Fail.

Also, to address the obvious - while the largely Democratic voting black citizenry of the 'ham and the white liberals who would also welcome this event might come out, I can't help but think that the sheer number of Red State, Obama hating types around here would make things awkward at best. I don't know what specifically might happen, but I think that a large number of naysayers and ill-wishers are more likely than a warm, welcoming, and supportive crowd of local citizens.

I just figure that one way or another we'd come out looking like a bunch of hicks not ready for the national stage.

Which, come to think of it, is pretty much what we are, except in football, Nascar, and the like.

Let's face it, when the national media thinks about Alabama, it isn't NASA or Barber's that springs to their minds.

True enough. As much as I'd like to rebut that, I remember we elected Roy Moore.

Again.

The rest of the state gave us George Wallace. Birmingham didn't.

RE: NRBR: The 'ham bidding to host the '16 DNC convention
The ideologies of both parties has completely turned me off politics. I have a certain way I believe, but can't stand to hear people with those same beliefs defend them. I am equally offended by the other side.

It would be great if My hometown had the infrastructure to sponsor such a historic event. Not because it is a political convention of a particular party, but because it is the process to select their nominee for the nations highest office.

No one respects the President anymore for the office. As a history fanatic, I honor Obama as much as Bush or as much as Reagan or FDR or Lincoln because whether I agreed with their politics or not, I respect the office and they are a part of history.

I wish the partisan bickering and venom would go away.

So, birmingham voted republican while Wallace was in office?
Or did B'ham just stay home on Election Day?

I don't know. I just know the segregationist dinosaur never took Jefferson County.

In Birmingham we love the gub'na.

Boo! Boo! Boo!
