NMR: Academic scandal at UNC hoops
http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/1...am-classes
"A copy of McCants' university transcript, labeled "unofficial" and obtained by "Outside the Lines," shows that in his non-African-American Studies classes, McCants received six C's, one D and three F's. In his African-American Studies classes, 10 of his grades were A's, six B's, one a C and one a D. The UNC registrar's office declined to send McCants an official, signed transcript because of a May 2005 hold on its release. According to the UNC athletic department, McCants had university property that had never been returned."
Wonder if this scandal will spread through NCAA sports?
Some might remember when J.R. Rider (UNLV) had a term paper turned in with his first name misspelled.
Not good!!!
Isaiah Rider, Jr. (not sure that is the correct spelling of his name. Believe the 'author' of his paper spelled his first name Biblically but that his real name is spelled differently).

Loss of institutional control. Would love to see UNC hoops get the death penalty.

RE: NMR: Academic scandal at UNC hoops
This is only news is that someone is admitting to it. A close friend of mine is an anthropology prof at a rival MAC school and over the years has told amazing stories about functionally illiterate athletes, mostly basketball, BTW, who have taken his intro class with no chance of ever passing, but who get by by being guided through cake courses in other departments. Most have no business in college or interest in in anything but basketball and partying. And while I consider both of those noble pursuits, it is the distinction between student-athlete and "student"(cough)-athlete.
(Aside: the reason I never bring these stories up on here is because they would be taken as partisan message board trolling, and I also am pretty sure the same thing goes on not only at the big schools, but is common at virtually all D-I schools.) And I see no push anywhere to hold athletes to the same standards as average academic students. What's really shocking is that some athletes are so academically incompetent, they can't even stay eligible when everything is handed to them.
(And yes, I know there are many, many examples of athletes who are serious and outstanding students.)

If even half of these allegations are true, it is just another graphic example of the extent to which the rabid pursuit of BIG TV dollars have corrupted college athletics and, in the process, academics as well (Carolina's African American Studies program in this case).

RE: NMR: Academic scandal at UNC hoops
When I was attending CMU, I spoke with a FB player about this topic and others, because of something that hit the news recently (about steroids, I think). His opinion was that you could go to any school in the country at the DI level and find a couple guys who were juicing, a couple who were getting "extra" help with classes, and a faculty member and/or tutor who was willing to go the *cough* extra mile to assist. Some schools are clearly worse than others. From everything I have seen and heard, these kinds of things go on less often at MAC schools than they do at the higher-profile ones.
And FWIW, the guy I spoke with said that, in his opinion, you are an idiot if you don't take advantage of that scholarship to better yourself. Even for the less than 1% of athletes who will make it to the pros, you are only an injury away from dream over, after all. Can't say I disagree.

Very few people care for any reason. Students and alumni want winning teams to cheer for. Administrators enjoy prestige.
So who's pushing against such things?
Is this a victimless crime?

I used to work for a major medical manufacturer. Another rep. in our region used to be a former O lineman for Arkansas. He told us that in the summer, he and a few other football players would each have a different day to clock in to their summer job and another player would clock out in the evening. They would get paid and never work a day.

When does Ed O'Bannon testify in his lawsuit? Didn't Ed say he did 12 hours of academics per week and 40 of athletics.
He was a full time athlete and a part time student. Lol.
