Not surprised that we are in the top 3 in the MAC and would be as well in the Sun Belt. We are serious about going FBS. Results should start to show in the next few years. Aug 30, big litmus test in attendance and hoping to score at least 3 times and keep Boston College in the low 40's.

how on earth does ULM stay FBS with a budget under $10mil?!?

Actually all of the Louisiana public G5 schools seem to have low budgets...

RE: Total Revenues by Team
The methodology each individual school uses in determining revenues skews this list quite a bit. Miami and BG being flipped shouldn't happen, though we probably counted the fundraising for the IPF in these numbers.

JMU would be #1 in both MAC and SBC, and #2 in CUSA.

Yea, FCS is where we belong.

IPF has nothing to do with our spending. We have been at the top of the MAC for a long time (or in top 3 or so). If anything, it has to do with us spending money on hockey that other schools in MAC don't spend on. MU, UMass, WMU, BG all spend $3-5 million on hockey. But then again, other schools like Akron are spending money on other sports (men's soccer) that Miami isn't spending money on.

It also has to do with state accounting rules for public universities. Thus all Virginia schools (JMU, ODU) numbers are inflated (they have to count expenses on their marching band etc that other's dont count as athletic spending), and Louisiana schools under-report. ULM, La Tech, ULL. Although ULM's numbers are still really low under any circumstance.

Keep telling yourself that.

One has nothing to do with the other. This is for the entire Athletic Department.

The restroom-less high school stadium your team plays in is a much more accurate reflection of FBS commitment and tells a different story.

Also, before you start beating your chest, you may want to look at the subsidy you receive.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/s.../finances/

Massachusetts is only one of three Universities playing at the FBS level with a SUBSIDY of OVER 80%.

Georgia State 84.59%
Massachusetts 81.02%
EMU 80.46%

(FYI - JMU 78.81%)

As has been mentioned numerous times, different states allow for different accounting treatments.

In the state of Virginia, anything that touches athletics must be treated as athletic expenditure. The band, cheerleaders, grounds crews, etc. Virginia also forces schools to report transparently. We can't hid our fees as tuition, as most other state schools do.

Also, look at the $$ from ticket sales, donations, and rights/licensing.

In the state of Virginia, anything that touches athletics must be treated as athletic expenditure. The band, cheerleaders, grounds crews, etc. Virginia also forces schools to report transparently. We can't hid our fees as tuition, as most other state schools do.

I just threw in JMU for kicks, no slight intended.

Massachusetts on the other hand... 03-wink

Keep telling yourself that.

One has nothing to do with the other. This is for the entire Athletic Department.

The restroom-less high school stadium your team plays in is a much more accurate reflection of FBS commitment and tells a different story.

Kind of have to agree with him on this one. You guys should have demolished the entire stadium and started from scratch because what you currently have is as bad as it gets for FBS.

Did they do that at the Big House?

We have a solid foundation and have been fully FBS 1 season. Will get there but first need to see a few sellouts, before expansion plans are executed.

The bathroom bit is over blown. Never had to wait in line at the bathrooms, They are big and well heated. They are in the same building as the teams locker rooms. Perhaps 40 yards away, with room to add end zone seating. Believe the visitor locker will remain the same and Women's Lacrosse will get the old home team locker room.

Spending? The top of the list says revenue.

For the vast majority of schools for which athletic department earnings and gifts come in at under their budget, that revenue includes a subsidy from the school, so the total "revenue" in terms of how much money comes into the Athletic Department is whatever they earn or are donated plus the subsidy to cover the shortfall between that and their spending.

Which means that how things are accounted in individual states makes a difference two ways. If some donations are counted as things reducing the athletic department costs, rather than as a revenue flow to allow the athletic department to meet its costs, the reported revenues go down along with the reported costs. If some costs are counted as athletic expenses in one state that are counted as general academic spending in another state (like a marching band counting differently even if it is actually budgeted as part of the Music Department budget in either case), that pushes both costs and revenues up (revenues because the Music Department spending on the marching band is counted as a subsidy to the football team, when from the perspective of the Music Department, the purpose of the football team is to attract a larger audience so that their students can get the experience of playing for a large crowd in a high pressure situation).

Do what? Tear down Ferry Field? No, when their original stadium became too small for their football team in the 1920's, they built the Big House and adopted their too-small 40,000 stadium into their track stadium. Buckeye sprinter Jesse Owens set five world records and tied a sixth at Ferry Field in 1935.

That school up north only built the Big House to a capacity of 80,000 at first, because of money constraint, but they built the footings to allow for later expansion, which they haven't yet tapped out.

But now they are building a purpose built track facility (I'd assume that Ferry Field would have been an old-fashioned track oval rather than a 400 meter oval), and are indeed tearing Ferry Field down to make room for parking.

At 17,000 for a multi-purpose stadium, it would make sense to do something similar if UMass built an FBS-sized stadium ... if some lower seating needed to be removed to make room for a 400 meter oval with 85 meter straightaways, the remaining existing seats would still be ample for a track & field / soccer / field hockey / lacrosse facility.

The boast that you never have to wait in line for a bathroom can be taken two different ways. There's the "its a semantic argument, the on-site bathroom facilities are excellent" angle, and the "there's never a big enough crowd to generate a line" angle.

The stadium was built for future expansion. Same as the Big House, the footings can take expansion on the press box side. Chatter is first end zone seating and then something on the the other side to get to 40k.

The stadium is mainly used by Men's Football and Women's Lacrosse. The Men's Lacrosse is a smaller field and is called Garber field. You can see it in bright green in this photo, which does not show the track, softball or Football Stadium along with the South West towers and low rise residential area.

The lower portion shows the Mullins center with the new Champion Center/men's basketball practice facilities and across the street is the students 52 Mill Rec Center.

So its this one?

I guess UMass packs them in for the Olympic sports as well. Anyway, I guess I shouldn't be talking on this board about anything but the current renovations, since adding end zone seats and extending / refurbishing the opposite side stands is really a topic for the conference realignment board.

RE: Total Revenues by Team
Based on revenue in their G5 conferences, it looks like Texas State and Old Dominion are out of place in their current homes. If there is some movement within the G5, those would be the two schools I would keep an eye on.

Though Old Dominion is in Virginia, a state where reporting rules inflate their figures to a certain degree.

Ratio of top to bottom schools, most extreme to least:

SBC: 3.31 = TX St / ULM
Big12: 2.67 = UTexas / TTech
Big10: 2.52 = Wisconsin / Maryland
CUSA: 2.19 = ODU / LA Tech
AAC: 2.15 = UConn / Tulane
SEC: 2.14 = Bama / Vandy
ACC: 1.97 = Louisville / Wake Forest
PAC12: 1.95 = USC / WA St
MWC: 1.73 = SDSU / Utah St
MAC: 1.40 = MiamiU / Bowling Green

Semi-interquartile ratio (Q1/Q3 ~ size/4, rounding to whole number of places and counting in from the ends)

1.82 SBC: GA St / AR St
1.54 SEC: UT / Mizzou
1.50 PAC12: Stanford / Oregon St
1.49 Big10: Iowa / Rutgers
1.34 Big12: Kansas / Kansas St
1.28 MWC: Boise St / San Jose St
1.27 AAC: USF/ECU
1.22 ACC: UVA / BC
1.22 MAC: CMU / Ball St
1.10 CUSA: UAB / UTSA

The Sunbelt is an outlier as a conference, topping both lists by a wide margin, because its got ODU above MAC level budgets, 3 schools on MAC level budgets, four schools around the lower edge of CUSA budgets, and four schools substantially below anything else in FBS.

The middle of the Big Three, the Big10, SEC and Pac12, are quite similar, but they are a case where the ratio of top to bottom is driven by how high the big money schools at the top can reach. Drop UTexas, Bama or (this year) Wisconsin in any conference ladder outside of the Big Three, they'll come in at the top of the ladder and push that top to bottom ratio way up.

CUSA is remarkable for how compact the middle of its distribution is ~ a conference of a very typical type of schools with a few outliers top and bottom (and as noted, part of the ODU outlier may be accounting rules rather than actual money flows).

But all of the Go5 other than the Sunbelt have a fairly compact middle of the ladder, with the MAC most notable for not having serious outliers on either side of the middle half.

.....

The title of this thread is misleading, this is not a list of total revenues by TEAM, it a list of total revenues by ATHLETIC DEPT. The revenue listed for UMass is mostly representative of their membership in the A10 and offers no clear indication of their commitment to FBS football relative to other MAC programs.

I'm not saying UMass isn't committing to football at the same level as MAC schools, I'm saying this data doesn't provide the answer.
