RE: OT: UNC academic fraud spreads to basketball & Roy Williams
Boy, good old Mr. Butch Davis started a bad thing at Chapel Hill. And now the beloved hoops program is being smeared along with the University as a whole. It amazes me that a school that prides itself in academic excellence and it is that, stoops to such levels. I guess it happens most everywhere.
And these atheletes that are supposed to be getting a paid for education want to be paid by these institutions......bullocks. How about using the free tutors, which cost a lot of money for a normal student to mold yourself into something in the future as many of you won't get paid to play after college. The whole situation smells like .

Means the NCAA "ban hammer" is coming down hard on Davidson. . . They've had some good teams over the past few years. Not to mention NBA All-star, Stephen Curry, playing for Davidson

McCants said the course did not require attendance, only a paper at the end of the term, and that someone else wrote his paper for him.
McCants also said that Roy Williams and his staff were all aware of exactly what was going on with this.
This will be discussed on ESPN's Outside the Lines this afternoon.
BIG STORY on Yahoo! Dang, Roy Williams was involved directly in the grade manipulation to keepRashad McCants and other eligible. The FUNNIEST/sad part of this is how the AD Bubba Cunningham is denying all of it. Basically he saying, "The players who never see the court have recounted a completely different experience than the one Rashad and some of his starting teammated had"
I would love to think that the NCAA would smack them down, but they and the P5 conferences soon won't answer to the NCAA and after paying players they will make taking classes "optional".

Maybe the players that never saw the court new they had better get a decent education.

UNC's Academic Fraud goes back almost 2 decades, WELL before Butch Davis was ever hired as a football coach.
Now maybe Butch (and his stupid staff that got caught) help initially expose a lot of this fraud...but it was ongoing in both major sports well before Butch arrived.

If this is happening at UNC, then something much worse is likely going on at SEC schools. And now these same clowns want autonomy and are threatening to leave the NCAA to get it.

It has already occurred due to the newly created but never reapplied "strict liability" sanctions thrown at Memphis.

RE: OT: UNC academic fraud spreads to basketball & Roy Williams
I just watched ESPN's OTL piece on the subject. They claim that other problems besides "paper classes" in African American (AF AM) studies were involved, specifically changing grades without authorization, and forging faculty signatures.
McCants say tutors wrote class papers for him and other players, in AF AM courses where the papers were the only course requirement. Class attendance was not required.
The UNC AD issued a press release last night saying that he has talked to other athletes who did not have Mr. McCants' same experience. Roy Williams declined to comment, or appear on the program, but UNC issued a statement "on behalf of Roy Williams" that essentially called McCants a liar.
Two UNC professors appeared on OTL, one defending the university, and one critical of the situation. The defending professor said she had known Roy Williams for 35 years, and she was confident he had nothing to do with this. She also said it was largely up to the student to get a quality education. The other professor didn't attack Williams, but said he wasn't surprised the offenses occurred.
None of that is surprising, but get this. Andy Katz invited comment from the NCAA and received this official reply:
"It is up to a school, not the NCAA, to determine if academic misconduct has occurred."
Holy crap! Where was that attitude toward Derrick Rose and Memphis, lol?

RE: OT: UNC academic fraud spreads to basketball & Roy Williams
If your school has even shown interest in a kid who went to UNC, you should be fired up about this. Who knows if some of these guys could have been great producers to society with just a little extra motivation in the classroom? Sure, a good amount of them probably couldn't have hacked it at Memphis, Cincy, UConn or any other great basketball schools, but you never know. UNC recruited them without even trying to give them a nudge in the class.
Fwiw that whole "this happens everywhere" crap is bs. I'm sure it happens with a lot of programs, but it's not as widespread as UNC. I had classes with at least 6 or 7 basketball players my freshman and sophomore years when I took general electives. I had to do group work with some of them....some were obviously a bit lackadaisical (but did pull their own weight) but others were solid students.

they would spout some nonsense about rose's flagged SAT score occurred before he was enrolled at Memphis, thus it's up to the NCAA to determine eligibility (like they do with pro status with the foreign kids).

This is stupid. We can talk all day about how college athletic is making money now and how professional these sports are. But we can't go away with the fact that this is still college athletic. If one is a student athlete, one needs to go to classes and do well in school.
I am a big fan of college athletic reforms, but this is still college.
Nowadays, many people like UNC coach or President need to have some common sense.
