Want to get in the minutia on how scientific and accurate it was... IDK...it is what it is...IMHO its about right knowing what I know about my home state...UH has won more FB conference Championship (SWC, CUSA )titles and been to more NCAA BB tournaments and final 4 and 2 and has more illustrious sporting history than Tech could ever dream of. Tech in all it years has one FB Co-conference (SWC) Championship, nothing out right in FB in all its 54 years in a major conference nothing, BB I believe once the woman's team won a NC ....UH has 17 NCAA NC sport titles albeit (Golf and Cross Country) but they count in the record books.
When tv ratings, ticket sales, donations, and every other measure of voluntary interest disagree with a 500 person phone survey it is the survey that is probably wrong.
What I take from that survey is more UH people didn't hang up than tech fans. No disrespect to any of the schools listed but I'd throw this one in the junk pile along with Nate Silvers "fan estimate based on google search data" report that had FSU as being middle of the pack in the ACC which is ludicrous.
Actually when you look at the TV ratings and account for differences in channel availability/habit and look at playing date and opponent, Houston actually does pretty well vs Texas Tech. Houston gets fewer big stage games and fewer games vs teams that are drawing big TV audiences vs. other teams.
But a poll like that is measuring something entirely different.
For example when polled, you get very high numbers of Americans who declare their party affiliation to be independent (depending on the mood of the country at a given time it can be as high as the low 40% range) yet in any election race a candidate not affiliated with the GOP or Dems polling 15% of the votes (or all non-mainstream combined won't hit that). In fact it would be a rare election when 15% of voters cast even one vote for a non-two-party candidate in any partisan race.
If someone polls me and asks my favorite NFL team, I have 33 possible answers. I can say the name of a team or I can say none. Most likely I will say Denver Broncos because they are the team I'm most likely to watch if it is a competitive game but I watch about as many Saints games, when I was working 3 hours from home when I was driving to my work city on Sunday, I tended to listen to the Cardinals on sat radio because they tended to play in the second Sunday window and their color man sounded like Jesse Ventura.
But I don't buy merchandise of any of them. I've only seen the Saints play once in person and the others never. I don't plan my day around watching any NFL team.
I watch Liverpool soccer and Sporting KC soccer, but it is rare that a Liverpool loss puts me in a bad mood or a win puts me a good mood. When SKC won the US Open Cup, I woke my wife up yelling. When SKC won the MLS Cup I was nervous and upset the entire game until the final penalty kick and then was going ape I was so happy. If I don't get up in time to watch Liverpool, it's whatever. I rarely miss an SKC game.
Polls like that don't measure whether a person will take the effort to go to a game, donate, or make a special effort to watch. It measures instead who is your default answer. Whether the school can convert them into a revenue source is another matter and that is influenced by success as well accessibility. You have to be a serious fan to seek out a game on ESPN News.
