OT - If anyone in here works for Yahoo!, Microsoft, Apple, or Google...
...then please:

1) Smack anyone and everyone who had anything to do with Windows 8. They deserve it for being THAT bad at what they do.

2) Smack the idiots who engineered either Yahoo! mail or Gmail. In more civilized countries they would be shot for crimes against the general public.

3. Smack the moron at Apple who thinks that one button mouse pads are a good idea. Somehow he convinced PC manufacturers to start making one button torture devises, so his stupidity is spreading.

I work in IT and I must say. 80% of the things users dislike about Windows 8 come from them not taking time to learn something new. Windows 8 is faster, more secure, and there is even a stupid proof feature that can be accessed by simply typing (reset). And I'm honestly amazed people pay me $100-$150 to do a factory reset on a windows 8 computer.

It seriously takes ten minutes to configure it for a desktop.

1. Right click task bar, go to navigation menu, set to boot straight to desktop

2. Press start menu, type in the name of applications you frequently use like (firefox, office, notepad, video games, etc.), then pin to task bar

Bam you will rarely ever have to leave the desktop again and your computer turns on extremely fast. And I honestly find the apps convient when using a desktop. Example, I press one button and the Netflix app is right there. On windows 7 I would have had to open a browser, type the web page, and wait for it to load.

The problem with these companies is that consultants they hire to make things usable are often overruled or ignored by front end developers and marketing people.

Perhaps it might have been smarter for the company to design it so it went straight to desktop rather than recreating something that looks like a Tumbler page gone wrong. And once you have a trillion users sold on the easy concept of a "start" button, maybe making a conscience decision to dump it was just simply wrong headed. Most every version has had a classic or emulation mode. Windows 8 avoided that. What a bunch of azz hats.

The problem with companies like Microsoft is they are run by 25 year old kids who play with code and think that's interesting and fun. For most people, a computer is just a portal that we run applications through. We work with applications. The operating system should be invisible. The best operating system is one that we don't have to learn and don't even notice is there. If I have to spend one second figuring the crap out---then its just wasting my time. I'm not using a computer to play with the operating system---I'm using to do the things I want to do.

I got a new Windows 8 computer. I had I for a week and gave it to my kid. To me, it was a useless pile of junk. My point is the system could have been more secure and more efficient without making the end user have to start from ground zero on the learning curve. Windows 8 is exactly why more folks are choosing Apple every day.

RE: OT - If anyone in here works for Yahoo!, Microsoft, Apple, or Google...
Windows 8 was horrible when it launched. The start menu was annoying, but the unforgivable thing to me was setting everything up so that you used the metro apps. I gave it a month and was so fed up with it that I looked up how to de-Windows 8 it. Mostly that was finding out how to change all defaults at once to traditional programs (it was really annoying every time you uploaded a new type of picture or something to have a full screen app suddenly take over and then going back and individually changing the default setting).

In retrospect though, this forced me to download classic shell for my start menu and I love it so much I probably will continue using it onto Windows 9/10/whatever. (I'm basically doing a superior version of the XP start screen set-up).

I have enjoyed Windows 8 and find it hard to believe some people think it's
so difficult to use.

if windows 8 is so amazing, then wonder why HP is selling new computers with windows 7

lets be honest, windows 8 is complete and utter garbage; people do not want a tablet and a computer combined; they want separate entities (hell even an Apple executive ridiculed Microsoft for their retardedness)

There's nothing more anti-intuitive than Apple I-phones. Its like putting something in French in an English speaking country. If you grew up using the language its easy. Otherwise, its really hard to find things. And that's typical. These are designed by heavy users and not vetted by regular users.

I actually found Excel less useful when they went to Visual Basic. They had functions that did 90% of the things I used to write Macros for. It wasn't worth the trouble to learn Visual Basic (and remember it when you infrequently had to go back and do something) for the remaining 10%, while the Macros were pretty easy to write. And I had programmed in Basic, but Visual Basic was very different. I just do those things manually.

I use a Macbook Pro for my everyday needs including business school. I use a Kindle Fire HDX as a tablet/e-reader, which of course is a highly customized version of Android. I use a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone, which is again an Android system. And I have a Windows 7 based netbook for those times I absolutely positively need to use Windows for something. All that being said Microsoft just is so behind with Windows. The kernel and OS core pieces are just inferior to the Unix based systems and have been for a long time. The interface is just a desperate plea to catch up to Apple and Google which have surpassed Microsoft in UI/UX design. Office is still their flagship product and for good reason.

Again this is a perfect example of what I said earlier. You did not take the time to learn the changes. I completely understand that it was frustrating, hell I almost have a masters degree and I hold numerous IT certifications and I did not even know how to turn my computer off when Windows 8 first came out lmao.

And Microsoft knew they were going to piss people off with changing things but IMO it was completely necessary. I really don't see many end users with traditional desktop computers in ten years. Tablets, cell phones, and all in one monitors are becoming more powerful and affordable every year. And all of these devices are touch screen. When that day comes Microsoft is going to already have an seasoned touch OS that can be used professionally.

I love android and IOS but you really have to go out of your way to get anything productive done on them.

No the problems with Windows 8 come from a long history of consistent operating systems from Microsoft. You could pick up a windows 7 computer after having only used Windows 98 and know where almost everything is. Windows 8 was the first full blown change (with the exception of DOS) ever and the older customer based absolutely hated this. I still remember the month it came out my more elderly clients just looked at it and got furious. They were not even willing to learn anything about it because it's not the way they remembered it.

And when you say people your not telling the truth. I want a laptop and tablet combined along with many others. The reason the Surface 1 and 2 did not catch on is because the hardware was terrible. I already pre ordered a surface 3 because the hardware is finally acceptable for my use.

Not everyone's brain is wired the same way.

I had a hard time switching to OSX because I grew up in the DOS environment then several versions of Windows. Sometimes I was so used to multiple steps that I couldn't grasp the simpler solution.

Now I use iPhone and iPad so much that I have to stop myself from trying to touch the screen to manipulate things on my windows desktop at work. Doubt Win8 would cause me much heartburn.

That's why Windows 8 is going to be met with resistance but like xp and 7 it's going to eventually become the standard. I remember all the articles about how windows xp was the worst operating system ever. And Microsoft had to literally force people to stop using it.

Excellent point. I use my computer for work. I simply couldn't afford to be completely unproductive while learning the new system. It was way easier just to grab my old computer. I think your point really mirrors mine. All the behind the scenes things that make Windows 8 superior (faster, more secure) could have been done while leaving in place the base Windows user interface so the indoctrinated user base didn't have start from ground zero--but instead could hit the ground running.

This.

People get to caught up on fan boy syndrome nowadays. Microsoft is a productivity and administration operating system that happens to have a large home customer base. Android is a media operating system no matter how much bloatware is added to it to try and make it productive. IOS is also a media operating system that is also great for web browsing and doing very basic things easily.

Everyone doesn't need to use things like PowerShell and not everyone needs the freedom of Windows or Android because you can really mess things up. I bought my grandmother a ipad last week because all she does is check email.

I also remember how universally hated Vista was. Even when you bought a new computer, you could avoid having it put on your new computer. Its considered one of Microsoft's biggest failures. Once the word of mouth got out on Vista, most people just skipped the upgrade and stayed with what they had. I heard so much bad buzz about it I completely avoided it . I never even had a Vista computer--for all I know I might have loved it. I actually gave this operating system a chance and hated it. Word of mouth on this is killing it and the PC companies are again offering a work around where you can buy a new computer with an older operating system.

My guess is that Windows 8 will be tweaked with a start button or a "classic" mode that will more closely emulate prior Windows versions. Frankly, its just being hard headed not to do that. It took Coca Cola nearly 3 months to roll out "Classic Coke". Its pretty foolish that Microsoft hasn't done the same with Windows 8.

I do basic video editing on my iPad because Movie Maker is s-l-o-w and I have a devil of time figuring out how to do simple tasks. I'm sure people who take the time to learn it can do well with it.

My daughter did a number of papers and presentations using an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard. Personally I only use a keyboard in a pinch because well I learned to type on an IBM Selectric and want a keyboard to feel like a keyboard. :)

RE: OT - If anyone in here works for Yahoo!, Microsoft, Apple, or Google...
There was no reason to ditch the look and feel of Windows 7 while in Windows 8 desktop mode. It could have been identical, and there would be no complaints. Also the tile home screen could have still been there, just the way it is now. It would have been so easy to support both interfaces. So, so easy.

That's why Windows 8 is frustrating to me. If I want to change a simple setting in the control panel, I can't just go there any more. I get dumped out into some whole screen app so I can't refer to any other documents that i have open. And then look around for some settings and then eventually find them in the old control panel applet just like before. But I can't have the old control panel? Stupid.

They should have kept the desktop the way it was. They could have had the tiled home screen for the new app store and whole screen apps that matched the MS tablets and the MS phones. It could have had both interface.

The thing is, there's no reason for a dual 24" screen PC to operate the sameway as a tablet or a phone. They are two completely different use cases. Just make some desktop shortcuts for the most used control panel applets, and remember WinKey-D and I'm okay. So, yeah I can get around in Window 8, but it will not get any praises from me for it's great user interface.

Perhaps it might have been smarter for the company to design it so it went straight to desktop rather than recreating something that looks like a Tumbler page gone wrong. And once you have a trillion user sold on the easy concept of a "start" button, maybe making a conscience decision to dump it was just simply wrong headed.

I'm not using a computer to play with the operating system---I'm using to the things I want to do.

Imagine what those of us who don't have numerous IT certifications are going through. I made the mistake of buying a new computer which came pre-loaded with Windows 8 a couple of months ago. I'm still learning how to make it half as useful as my old computer was with Windows 95. You gave two steps to convert to desktop. Now, I don't really know what that means, but even if I did, I don't think I could follow those two steps on my own without some IT help. And I'm not sure it would matter much, unless I can figure out how to get it to work as well as my old computer for things like Office applications.

I really don't have complicated computer needs. I currently have all my files stored on zip drives. I'd prefer to use those drives for backup purposes only, and access my files straight through the computer, as I did before. I'm still trying to figure out if that's possible. So far, it seems as if my computer changes on a daily basis, with new things popping up out of nowhere. So maybe my failed attempts to save files will result in some new shortcut popping up.

The point is, to a non-IT guy over the age of 20, nothing about this setup is the least bit intuitive, or even logical. And I really don't want to pay somebody more than I paid for the computer itself to show me how to make it almost as useful as the one I bought in 1997.

The interesting thing is that the most useful feature possible doesn't seem to be widely used.

I almost always text using voice instead of keying it on the phone. I find it pretty reliable. Yet I don't see that mentioned much with PCs. You would think as now most kids hunt and peck and don't learn to type a few commands would at least be common.
