"Dallas ISD fired 15 coaches, administrators and other employees after an investigation showed widespread falsifying of documents to get athletes into DISD schools.
The most notable firings include DISD Athletic Director Jeff Johnson and Madison High School basketball coach Roderick Johnson. Madison HS won state titles the last two seasons.
In total, 11 employees from Conrad HS, Madison HS and Wilmer-Hutchins HS were fired for their role in falsifying documents to recruit players outside attendance boundaries. Four others were let go from DISD’s administrative building.
“There are recruitment violations that stem from that, that we found out and that’s why we did the investigation and that’s why we’re taking some strict action today, because we will not tolerate UIL violations in this district,” said DISD Superintendent Mike Miles.
The investigation was launched after the death of Troy Causey in March. Causey was a basketball player at Wilmer-Hutchins and was killed allegedly by Madison HS player Johnathan Turner during a fight.
Police told DISD officials they discovered coaches improperly recruited Causey to play for Wilmer-Hutchins even though he lived in Richardson at the time.
Causey’s mother, Tammy Simpson, said she had her suspicions when Causey switched schools.
“I was suspicious, but I was also told my son would be going there for the magnet program, for the culinary arts program,” Simpson said. “In that sense, they made me feel like everything was going to be OK. I knew what they were doing was wrong. That’s them. They were recruiting, I understand that. My whole concern was for the welfare of my son.”
After the tip, DISD launched its own investigation that culminated in Friday’s 15 firings."
