They were amazed at how similar things are in their "social" aspects of middle and high school. Nothing has changed.

I told my daughters to watch "Pretty in Pink", and I want them to watch "Less Than Zero".

They were not impressed with James Spader in P in P, but when I told them Robert Downey Jr is in Less than Zero, they want to watch it.

What other movies from our teen years late 70-90's can they watch?
I have St Elmo's Fire also on back up.

At that age, I didn't watch movies with my parents...

Man I haven't seen anything listed that was out when I was a teen. Maybe some of the first Clint Eastwood movies.

Our small town theater ran like this:

Elvis movie
Jerry Lewis movie
007 movie
John Wayne movie
Generic Western
Disney movie
scary movie

And then the loop began again.

I will make this observation. My daughter was about five when Back to the Future came out. I loved those movies that she grew up with.

Recently I was watching Back to the Future with my grandkids, and you talk about stuff going over their heads, they had no understanding of a movie that had someone in the 80s going back to the 50s. Funny.

I thought it would be a good idea for Universal to reboot the series with the present being 2015 and the kid goes back to 1985, but if don't think it would work the same.

I think teens in 1985 were a little bold and too informed for it to work like it did with the innocence of the 1950s.

Those movies were overrated. I had a hard time watching them.

RE: Movies we watched as teens
I can remember watching all of these at the drive in or theater with my folks:

Smokey and the Bandit I, II, III (1st is still my all time favorite movie)
Jaws I, II, III
Coal Miner's Daughter
Urban Cowboy
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

I also remember my parents watching "Helter Skelter" and trying to explain the Manson story to me in terms a kid could understand. Same with the tv movie "Fatal Vision".

My friend and I were just talking yesterday about how you can get anything on-demand now and how far technology has come since stores like "Rent a Flick" were around even before Blockbuster came along.

Oh God yes! Love love LOVE that movie, still. John Boorman did an excellent job, as did all the actors involved. Truly magical.

House Party 3

In all seriousness, I didn't see this at the movies, but the first House Party is a GREAT teen movie. Especially the dad looking for his son so snuck out of the house to go to the party.

Let me add...
If you want something PG-13... clueless.

If we can go R rated, American Pie and Cruel Intentions. Those two were just after my teens, but I love them.

All fine choices.

The Thin Man movies are great...couldn't stop laughing

No Time for Sergeants is REALLY funny.

Now these movies were decades before I was even a thought in my parents head...but great none the less

Good work! We have done ALL the star wars, indy jones, jaws, vacation, movies. Ones I will have to look up, Starman, Fast Times. I know Logan's Run is not on Netflix, already checked. Not sure about Blade Runner.

I remember all the Planet of the Apes movies too. Bond is done too.

Well, then, as a child, you should see the original Camelot first.
