Miami v. Alabama?
UM has been approached about opening the football season against Alabama in 2017 in Atlanta or LSU in 2018 in Arlington, Tx. UM will consider playing in one but not both.

No doubt - home & homes with SEC teams are getting tougher to come by.

What does neutral vs home have to do with this? Both games are neutral, yea? One in Atlanta, the other in Dallas.

By the way, does anyone know who gets the TV revenue in these neutral site games? The conference of the home team gets it when it's actually on one team's home field but what's the deal on a neutral site game? I'm guessing that neither conference gets TV revenue and the two schools split the TV revenue but that's just a guess. If so, that would explain all the neutral site basketball games featuring traditional powers like Duke, UNC, UK and KU.

Why not Jacksonville or Orlando as sites? Both options are traveling disadvantages for Miami.

I think whoever is putting on the tournament or kickoff game owns the rights and usually sells them to ABC/ESPN. The teams each receive a fixed payout for playing in the games.

I'd guess it's all about the finances. They'd love to play in both, I'm sure, for the fans and for the players, but often times it's the higher-ups that screw around with things.

a Hurricanes-Crimson Tide game is being a bit more likely if you are reading the tea leaves. While it would be a bit more fun to see a home-and-home between the two programs ... The new Atlanta Stadium that will be the home of the Falcons is scheduled to open prior to the 2017 season and a college game featuring Alabama and Miami would certainly be a nice kickoff event, as well.

Though nothing is finalized, UM’s talks with Cowboys Stadium have progressed and all parties are working toward having the Hurricanes open the 2018 season against LSU in Arlington, Tx.

The game would be on a Saturday night and televised nationally.

UM has decided to focus on finalizing that game and has decided against playing Alabama in Atlanta to open the 2017 season.

Not that I want to play Alabama again but VT needs a neutral site P5 opponent for 2017.

RE: Miami v. Alabama?
Some programs, let me rephrase most programs, need 7 home games a season to be fiscally secure each season. Unless the games qualifies as a preseason bowl and doesn't count against your 12 game regular season, it would tough for most programs to play more than one neutral site game a season.
