Top 50 college coaches in nation according to ESPN
50-25 here with Pastner and Cronin on list so far. No doubt two or three other AAC coaches will be listed in the top 25.

It's too bad they didn't do the top 500 hoops coaches. Donnie Jones might have made that list, behind some Atlantic Sun assistant coaches.

Gotta imagine Ollie and Larry Brown end up in the top 25. Larry Brown honestly is the best coach in all of college basketball. Only coach ever to win a national title and an NBA title, and in a little over 2 years has turned a program from a dumpster fire to a preseason top 10 team.

Unlike some coaches, Larry is also not a fan of the Baylor Bears 05-mafia

If this is judged on the whole body of basketball work I'd go with 'Coach K' at Duke or Rick Pitino. Granted - if Brown's SMU *finishes* in the top 10 and takes a deep run into March - then maybe. 03-wink

If I'm going on whole body of basketball work that leans me even more towards Larry Brown. If I'm going just in college then obviously I wouldn't put Brown at the top, but Brown's one of the better NBA coaches of all time to go along with a National Championship winning college coach.

Why?

I told Goodman that Fran Dunphy should easily be in the top 50 considering his many years of success (and despite his recruiting and Tournament failures) and he said he's not in it because of his recruiting and because of the state of our program (i.e. one bad year). No one in the city would say Phil Martelli is a better coach than Fran Dunphy. In fact, talent aside, I think it's pretty much a consensus that Dunphy is the best actual college basketball coach in the city.

Who is a top 50 coach (D-I stats only):

43-27 record (.614), 19-19 conference record (.500)
0 NCAA Tournament appearances in 2 years
NIT Championship winner

149-113 record (.569), 81-63 conference record (.5625)
1 NCAA Tournament appearance in 8 years
2 NIT appearances

472-250 record (.654), 275-95 conference record (.743)
15 NCAA Tournament appearances in 25 years

148-115 record (.563), 67-67 conference record (.500)
3 NCAA Tournament appearances in 8 years
1 NIT appearance

325-240 record (.575), 169-131 conference record (.563)
6 NCAA Tournament appearances in 18 years
3 NIT appearances

105-120 record (.467), 44-70 conference record (.386)
2 NCAA Tournament appearances in 7 years
1 NIT appearance

162-82 record (.606), 73-41 conference record (.640)
1 NCAA Tournament appearance in 6 years
1 NIT appearance

Donnie had 3 20+ win season before last year. Our fans act retarded sometimes. Even more funny is the Speraw lovers. The guy that lost to a non scholarship d3 school and nearly lost to Rollins college. It took a technical foul by the coaches son for us to beat them. Oh, the good old days of ucf basketball m

Gary Parrish said a better measure would be to ask ADs who would they want as their coach over the next five years. Parrish said that he thinks Pastner would be top 20 there. Plus his players don't get into trouble and the Memphis basketball team has a perfect APR in each of the last four years.

Ha so you mean all the negative Poster after every off season are wrong? They claim we have a coach no other school would want

I'm fine with where he is currently rated. I agree with Ramen_Tiger, a couple of strong runs in the tourney can change the rating, but he's rated about where he should be right now.

I disagree. I think he has done a great job with Memphis. Proved that you can win there without the Calipari model. He's going to be in demand.

Pastner has done a great job with the off the court stuff but he still needs a deep run in the Tournament to be 'in demand' at any of the elite schools that can afford to pay more than he's making right now (2.65 M). And *IF* he makes a deep run while at Memphis I expect he'll get a raise. But yes, Pastner is a huge success as the face of the Memphis program.
