New Orleans District Dumps All Public Schools In Favor Of Charter Schools
This is good news for the people of N.O. on many levels. My first thought was that if a teacher didn't perform s/he's outta there and good teachers might be rewarded.
Quote:This week, the New Orleans Recovery School District permanently closed its last five traditional public schools, making it the first public school district in the country entirely composed of charter schools, according to The Washington Post.
As Al Jazeera notes, until this week, 84 out of the 89 schools in the New Orleans Recovery School District were charters -- schools that are publicly funded but privately operated. Now, since the last five traditional public schools have been shut down, all of the district's students will have to enter a lottery for a spot at one of the city's charter schools, the Washington Post reports.
Recovery School District -- a state-run district that manages Louisiana's low-performing schools -- took over a majority of New Orleans's public schools after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It closed failing traditional public schools or turned them over to charter operators.

good teachers might be rewarded.
by some arbitrary number that is mostly out of their control. They will still make a lot less than a union teacher up North. It's a shame.

Well, let's see how this turns out.
I think Mach perfectly showed the ****** teacher mentality to all of this, how much do the crappy teachers get paid? After all, being a ****** teacher he'd know and that's all he'd care about.

I've taught in New Orleans at both charter and private. The charters have done better than the public but both are vastly inferior to our private schools (which are some of the best in the country actually).
Charter schools just have more individual freedom than public. That said... it creates a lot more uncertainty for a child when they are unsure if their school will be open for the entirety of their high school experience... and very few charter schools have school spirit.
FOR NEW ORLEANS it is a good thing. I doubt this same model would work nation wide.

They don't need to make as much as a teacher up north.

Maybe not for cost of living but I guarantee the difficulties of the job are higher. Teaching at a charter school in New Orleans is exhausting.
90% of my grey hairs arose during my teaching and left when I started my PhD.

Charter schools are public schools. The taxpayers are footing the bill.
