And isn't that what the vast majority of people in this country do? Learn to speak English?

I did and so did my parents and countless generations of immigrants before them.

What I find so unbelievable is how the same people who can speak only one language can look down their nose at those of us who speak two.

Learning a language isn't difficult and the person whose language is the prime one gets an advantage.

I think your point is perfectly valid. I just wonder how to learn as an adult. I learned French and English as a child, but my attempts at Spanish have failed miserably.

One caveat is that it's easy to learn a language as a child, not so much as an adult. I see that first had. My kids are picking up Spanish really really fast while I'm struggling. I'll get there, but it's going to take a while. Will problem have to go the "submersion" route to finally get the results I want.

The politicians have to walk a tight rope between keeping their constituents happy by bemoaning the porous borders and vowing , if elected, they'll do something about it and all the while winking at their big $$ donors (Big Business) and promising not to do anything to their cheap labor force. Look at the border candidates from both parties and how they film a campaign spot at the border saying how they'll fight to keep america safe and stop the filthy heathen immigrants ( rednecks eat it up), then we they get in office what happens? Nada, zip, zero. Why? because their $$ handlers don't want it to.
Can we all please grow up a little bit, stop pointing fingers at the other party, and realize WE are the problem. Most Americans are far to naive and only have sound bite educations in politics. They believe the politicians because the pols tell us what we want to hear, not the truth.
So. What part of what I said isn't true then?
I take it some of the other comments, like not blame one party, is not directed at me or my comments since they didn't include them. However you are wrong when you say both parties are equally wrong. One does have an agenda to benefit from it.

RE: If You Can't Speak English
Not saying it isn't true. It is true. What I'm trying to express is when we use words like "The government", we're being to general. We need to look more closely at who exactly is the cause. The legislative branch creates the laws, the bureauracy carries them out thru the various agencies. We tend to blame the agencies, who are made up of flesh and blood, by and large, hard working, good people. when congress, the people we voted for, are truly responsible for the mess. I believe both parties have an agenda. If not, something would have been done by now. We've had both republican and democrat Presidents and a mostly republican congress for years now, and nothing has been done. To point the finger at one party is an over simplification. I think the congress likes this polarization. It works to their advantage. As long as we place our focus, anger and blame on the other party, we're not holding our own people accountable. I think this is at least part of the Tea Party philosophy.. hold them ALL accountable.
