Personal Opinion: Memphis will benefit from being in the West
Throughout C USA Memphis was in the stronger eastern division, and had to take the back seat to USM, UCF, ECU, and Marshall. There is a void, and an opportunity, for Memphis to grow in the west, where they can build back into selling out the Liberty Bowl, and create a foundation that will make them competitive. If everything works out well we could see half the conference averaging 40k+ per game.

Opinions?

The divisions, as they exist now, are pretty balanced. That said, I do think Memphis and Memphis fans benefit. Our coach, Justin Fuente, is the former TCU offensive coordinator. He likes to recruit the Texas and Oklahoma area. If these divisions last, and there is a question there considering a possible change in the NCAA rules, I think it will help Memphis recruiting in those areas. 04-rock

Selling out the LB is pretty ambitious, but with bowl eligibility and 3 P5s OOC, 40,000+ per season is doable.

I really like the west - we have history with everyone except Navy.

Hell of a lot better than the west division we just came from.

statistically the west has the better conference. i agree that the east will be stronger for the first few seasons, but it will even out

but i do agree Memphis has an opportunity, not because of the reasons you named but new recruiting grounds that better fit them

I agree

Memphis has definitely taken advantage of Texas recruiting backgrounds, just as Tulsa, they too have done quite well over the years b/c of it.

I agee. Initially, the East looks to have the iside track on the league championship; however, I can see Houston and Navy making alot of noise.

This is going to be an exciting (and fun) year! 04-cheers

*IF* the division thing sticks this is a major plus for the Tigers IMO. No offense to UConn but we don't draw recruits from there nor is it a doable trip nor playing football in their winter something our players can practice for.

I agree, better chance to get to 6-6 in the West.

I miss going to bowl games...I even enjoyed Detroit.

I agree, I think it will be good for Memphis. The AAC needs a strong Memphis. I used to be so Anti-Memphis, but lately I reconsidered completely.

Sure, if we're going to make a trip 'up there' I'd rather go to Navy every two years.

Memphis, two years ago under Porter, was the worst D1 college football I've ever witnessed in my life. Actually high schoolish. Despite the investments and the new football coach I'm really amazed we've been able to dig out of that almost bottomless hole as fast as we have.

Back at ya with 4 years of Toledo-ball. Bowl in the 2nd season - happy about that.
Thrilled to be back in a division with a long-time opponent, the good Tigers.

Nice set up. West has recruting ties into Tex which they need. And East to Fla. then with crossovers, both can get a flavor of Tex or Fla recruiting.

Big things as in getting Memphis to a 3-9 record (1-7 in the conference) and tied with Temple for last place in the AAC?

Hell Lebo has actually gotten ECU to post season play 3 out of the 4 years that he has been the coach and he even won a tournament; conversely Fuente has not even got Memphis near .500 in the 3 years has has been coach. His next post season (as in bowl) will be his first post season game.

Same requirements. Make the post season or get fired. That is it. Fuente has no excuses. You claim that Lebo needs to step it up, but he has been better at ECU than Fuente has been at Memphis. So using your own metrics; Fuente needs to go get some better players or he needs to be given his walking papers.
