That's an interesting theory, but from what I understand about the sound barrier, the sonic boom is not audible at the source.

I think one of the theories at the time was that it had something to do with fireworks (I believe the event happened around New Year's). Of course, this doesn't explain why this doesn't happen more often.

It’s possible those birds believed that their souls could
board the alien space craft following the Hale–Bopp Comet.

The theory that makes the most sense to me is that the poles are slowly shifting causing the birds to panic and die. Dunno if that's true or not. Could make sense because a lot of sea life was dying at the same time the birds did.

I think it was some kind of government experiment.
