Maya Angelou passed
Not really spin roomy but she was my favorite poet growing up. She was the Nations Poet for a bit. Figured I'd share this lovely poem with yall:

When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

I'm not big on poetry. But she lived a hell of a life from Arkansas to Africa and back and that is something to admire.

She was an amazing example of overcoming birth status, bigotry, and low expectations.

Sorry, I can't say that her passing means anything to me... (in fact, I'd probably be chastised if I shared what I thought about her importance in the world today).

Surprising to me. She was an artist, activist, and good role model for all youth. What was your beef with her?

RE: Maya Angelou passed
She was pro-Fidel... because "he wasn't white". She was pro-communism , because "her dad wasn't a slave under communism", she supported Mumia Abu-Jamal, she was constantly complaining about the modern US, because "the playing field was unlevel for blacks for so long", she said capitalism was bad because it "held down black people". She stood behind Rachel Corrie.

She even got on MSNBC and said that basically because President Obama was black, there were a lot of people who were going to show their "inner racism", calling opponents of Obama as "thick" and "dense". She basically spoke up saying that because Zimmerman was acquitted, we had more racial work to do in this country.

Don't get me wrong, she stood with Malcolm X and MLK Jr when they deserved support from all walks of life.

But she was not the heroine that so many people want to make her out as...

When I was in elementary school Mary Angelou came to our school library and read stories to us. I had no idea who she was at that time, but for some reason I still remember that day.

The reasons for her being remembered have little to do with her accomplishments. She's a prime example of how low people set the bar for many blacks.

RIP. I wasn't a fan of hers though. Maybe because I don't like poetry.

So liking poetry makes me weak/less of a man?

And if you don't get beyond the surface level of that poem, bunnies and trees, you're as dumb as a pile of bricks.

What, a sensitive poet beat you guys up growing up? Stole your girlfriend? I can smell the insecurity.

Oh yes, the great imploration of psychology to show how everyone else is really insecure. Next you'll be telling us that we're homophobic too.

Pro tip: these are wuss things too.

It's not liking poetry (I don't care for much poetry, but David did alright with it), it's the feigned emotional schlock that you claim to adore.

Calling someone weak for liking poetry is both douchey and reeking of insecurity. Yup. Congrats Torch. You turned a RIP thread into a masturbatory insult slinger. So proud of you. Whats scary is youre over 35 and still calling people names for liking the arts. Kids in junior high do that.
