KSU plays Louisville Friday at 6:00 p.m. The game is on ESPN3. The rest of the games this weekend are all on either ESPN3 or ESPNU.

As a possible point of interest, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the Div. III national championship in baseball on Tuesday, capping a year that also saw them win national championships in football and basketball --- the first time any division accomplished such a feat. Very impressive, considering the number of schools competing. 04-cheers

yeah UW-W is an absolute power in just about everything these days. I imagine they will dethrone Mount Union relative to the number of national titles in football. they crushed the Purple Raiders in last year's title game.

The 9-year war...Wisconsin-Whitewater meets Mount Union in the Division III football championship 8 times in 9 years, the score is WW 5 - MU 3, with Mount Union winning the year that Whitewater didn't make the playoffs. Mount Union is still up overall, 11-5. Next round, hopefully, this December.

Year Champion Score Runner-Up
2013 Wisconsin-Whitewater 52-14 Mount Union
2012 Mount Union 28-10 St. Thomas (Minn.)
2011 Wisconsin-Whitewater 13-10 Mount Union
2010 Wisconsin-Whitewater 31-21 Mount Union
2009 Wisconsin-Whitewater 38-28 Mount Union
2008 Mount Union 31-26 Wisconsin-Whitewater
2007 Wisconsin-Whitewater 31-21 Mount Union
2006 Mount Union 35-16 Wisconsin-Whitewater
2005 Mount Union 35-28 Wisconsin-Whitewater

I guess at some point shouldn't UWW make a case to move up a level? To me, the way it should be is you prove yourself and dominate at a level then, hey, let's see what we can do at the next level. But then we'd never have UB in the MAC, I suppose. It's all about the finances, and it's interesting but UWW and Mount Union can just dominate year after year because they now have a culture that supports them and makes it profitable, which is cool, but then other D-III football programs end up going through the motions. You end up with haves and have-nots even at that level. But if UWW starts dominating across sports like they do in football, it really makes one think they are not a true D-III athletic program any longer.

In any case, GO FLASHES!!!!

Yeah, I'm curious as to what their secret formula is.

There's good talent in WI, but across so many sports?

Maybe they have a large endowment for academic scholarships across the university, some of which end up becoming de facto athletic scholarships.

Sometimes winning builds winning...

There's a lot of High School football players in Northeast Ohio. Few of these get D-I scholarship offers. If a good player (maybe just undersized for D-I) wants to continue playing after High School, there's a bunch of schools to pick from. If Mount Union and 4-5 others come calling, the recent success of Mount Union helps make its recruitment letters stand out.

Also, playing for Larry Kehres was attractive, and I'm sure his son will keep up the family history.

Wisconsin-Whitewater is a big school - 12,000 students. The University of Mount Union has 2,200.

There is a lot of complaint that the UW schools don't fit the D3 philosophy because they are public. Most of the UW schools outside of the biggies (Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay) play in the WIAC Conference and they do play at a higher level than most D3 schools.

I tend to think of it as an excellent choice given limited resources instead of a state trying to support 10 D1 programs at their public institutions.

You just had to ask, didn't you?
It's the same formula that brought my CMU academic laurels to Madison (the ONION) twenty-some years ago: frequenting midget strip bars and arm wrestling lesbians for money.

When I went to sleep it was Louisville 5-0 at the bottom of the 7th, and when I googled the score this morning, Louisville 5-0 is how it ended.

Kansas beat UK, so I guess that means the Flashes have to beat UK in the elimination quarterfinal. Kansas play Louisville in the qualifying semi-final.

UK was saving A. J. Reed for a winner's bracket matchup with Louisville: 11 wins and a 2.10 ERA on the mound. He also hits .353 and leads the nation in HR with 23 and slugging percentage (.768) and OPS (1.259). He has more HR than 193 DI teams. He was just named national player of the year by one publication. Several more will clearly follow.

But instead of L-ville, we get him. Flashes batting in the bottom of the first as UK went down in order.

Flashes' bullpen gives up 4 in the 9th after a masterful pitching performance by Nick Jensen-Clegg and are eliminated by UK 4-2.

All that and KSU decides to pitch to him in the 9th with a 2-0 lead and a runner on second meaning first was open. Put him on base and work for the force at any bag, instead he puts one in the gap and starts the game winning rally.

Sorry to hear about the bullpen implosion, Axe, truly. Protect the bullpen by keeping them out there --- just ask the Detroit Tigers. Still, a good run for the Flashes, and nobody takes them for granted, nor should they---ever.
