The perception and reality of NCAA show-cause penalties (USAToday)
In light of the hires at Houston and Auburn >>

...Auburn fans greeted him at the airport in March with a mosh pit, a display of exuberance if there ever was one. Hiring Bruce Pearl — who still had five months left to serve out a show-cause penalty — was deemed a major coup for Auburn basketball ... Two weeks later, Houston hired Kelvin Sampson, a year after his five-year show-cause expired.
After nearly three years away from coaching, Pearl has returned to the Southeastern Conference. He coached at Tennessee from 2015-11, taking the Vols to the NCAA tournament each year before being fired after lying to NCAA investigators about hosting recruits at a barbecue his home.
Sampson was forced to resign from Indiana in 2008 after the NCAA discovered major violations involving impermissible phone calls to recruits. He was hit with a five-year show-cause order that expired in 2013.
"Here's the thing: It's like an eligibility issue," Pearl said. "I had to sit out three years. I wasn't eligible. Kelvin wasn't eligible. Once we became eligible and sat out whatever was required of us by NCAA rule, we were back. In Kelvin's case, he's back in good standing. In my case, I will be back in good standing on August 24, God willing, when my penalty is complete.
"I think that prospects know what I did. They know the penalty I've paid."
Sampson said he was never worried that the scandal and its fallout would brand him a certain way. He, too, got his second chance in college coaching. And it didn't take long after that show-cause order was up. He said he started getting calls about jobs last year.
"I knew eventually I could go back if I wanted to because people aren't always what they appear to be," Sampson said. "We live in a society if someone wants to sensationalize something or write something, it doesn't make it true. I knew enough people knew me and knew my character that I could come back if I wanted to.
"Did I make some mistakes? Absolutely. I owned up to those mistakes. A lot of things I look back on at Indiana and wish I could have done different, I do. But I don't want to get into that. You learn and move on."...

I bet few college football and basketball fans realize that the "show cause" penalty has been imposed about 100 times and the list of sanctioned coaches is pretty darn impressive. I think its a great rule-and I have no problem with coaches getting that second chance
