RE: 2014 previews are coming out
Sporting News preseason pick for defensive player of the year in the conference- Junior Sylvestre. He's also rated as hardest hitter in the conference by the Sporting News.

All-MAC picks from UT besides Sylvestre at linebacker (these are also from the Sporting News):

Greg Mancz on the offensive line

Treyvon Hester at defensive tackle

Jeremiah Detmer as the placekicker (also named 3rd team All-American by the Sporting News)

RE: 2014 previews are coming out
Lindy's picks a first and a second all-conference team. Greg Mancz made its first team all-MAC at offensive line and so did Jeff Myers on the O-line. Treyvon Hester also named first-team all-MAC at linebacker by Lindy's.

Only Rocket to make second team all-MAC (all of this is assuming I haven't overlooked anybody) is Alonzo Russell at wide receiver.

Mancz also said by Lindy's to be the best run blocker in the conference and is 6th on Lindy's list of top 10 NFL talents in the conference: there he's described as "about as decorated as a MAC OL can be".

Speaking of overlooking things, Detmer is first team all-MAC at kicker for Lindy's as well. And they did one better than the Sporting News. Jeremiah is a 2nd team all-American at kicker according to Lindy's.

RE: 2014 previews are coming out
I hope I haven't made any mistakes in this thread yet.Not like the one I just found in the Lindy's guide, where they list their projected newcomer of the year (Gehrig Dieter) as being a Rocket when he is actually a Falcon. I know mistakes are going to happen when putting this type of thing together, but mixing up UT and BG seems like a big blunder.

And it's a good thing I've been checking a few of these names. I don't pay that much attention to recruiting and transfers, and that one could easily have slipped by me. If it had ... 05-duck

From the Sporting News - "The Rockets' defense, which ranked 88th in the nation last year, can't continue its benevolent ways. Toledo, in fact, has been subpar defensively for nearly a decade".

Weak link on offense, at this point, is depth of WR. Hoping some young talent rises to the top…in a hurry.

RE: 2014 previews are coming out
Athlon has UT #1 in the MAC West and BGSUX #1 in the MAC East.

Toledo
NIU
BSU
CMU
WMU
EMU

BGSUX
Ohio U
Akron
Buffalo
KSU
Miami O
UMass

Interesting enough BGSU is the favorite, a team the Rockets beat at the Doyt last season. The two teams will meet in the GB this year. UT's OL and DL are rated #1 and #2 in the MAC. The Falcon's OL and DL are ranked #5 and #4.

Nothing matters unless we get an all-MAC level performer at QB. NIU has had Harnish (Mr Irrelevant) and Lynch, before that it was Levevre (sp?) at CMU, Rothlisberger at Miami, UT had Gradkowski who was preceeded by Bolden and prior to that it was Wallace and Hujzak (sp?), etc. No one wins without a top level QB.

I think our running game can make up for not having the best QB in the conference. If we have a QB that doesn't make a ton of mistakes and can keep the opposing defenses honest, I think offensively we'll be just fine.

I predict our QB will be at worst top three in league as long as he stays healthy.

Ely was a HS All-American at QB. Rated one of the Top Passers in the nation coming out of HS. His HS ran an Offense that was very similar to UT's. I don't think you have to worry about not having one oF the top QB's in the MAC.

Really looking forward to seeing how things shake out in camp. I watched Ely in HS...was always impressed with how he played the game. Plant is an outstanding program. He should be well prepared given his HS experience and time at Bama.

I agree. Look at Alabama. They rarely ever have the top QB in the SEC, but man oh man, their RB core is AMAZING! Those running backs have helped them get a few national titles along the way.

But in the MAC, it has been proven that teams can only win with an All MAC QB.

Rumor I heard, was from shortly after Eli, came to campus, was he was like having a coach on the field.
QB IQ is a rare quality.

Like I've been saying for a while...he comes from a great HS program that prepared him well for the next level. He played behind and learned from players such as Robert Marve (Miami, Purdue) and Aaron Murray (UGA). His HS coach runs a disciplined program and we know Saban demands attention to detail. I'm looking forward to him getting his shot. Of course I'm biased...his family lives about a block from me...we're probably the only homes in Tampa flying UT flags. 04-cheers I'm really looking forward to the season and hoping to catch a few games this year...most likely Mizzou (may have to heckle Pinkle and Coah Kool) and thinking about hitting up the UC game in the nati.

4 Rockets on Phil Steele's first team All-MAC. 8 (by my count) more UT players on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams.

Headline says 11 made the squads, but I'm counting 12.

Of course, my arithmetic skills aren't that great.

RE: 2014 previews are coming out
It seems to be too early to start a 2014 opponents thread, but here are a few odds and ends from the season preview magazines about some of the teams the Rockets will play this year, along with things about other MAC teams.

New Hampshire ranked 4th in the FCS by Athlon, 5th by Lindy's

Cincinnati in Lindy's top 25 at #24

Missouri ranked #25 in Athlon's top 25

Athlon also ranked the top 25 coaches: Gary Pinkel at #22 (Nick Saban ranked #1).

Who the quarterback will be for Iowa State seems to be a question mark as of now, but here are some guys to keep an eye on other than whoever the starting quarterback for the Cyclones turns out to be. According to Lindy's and the Sporting News, Iowa State's E. J. Bibbs is the first team all Big 12 tight end. According to Lindy's, Aaron Wimberly is a second team all-conference running back.

The Sporting News says Bowling Green could be good enough make the top 25.

Sporting News says the MAC coach on the "hottest seat" is Central Michigan's Dan Enos.

According to the Sporting News, Akron is the conference team on the rise. Team that's descending is UMass. I wouldn't have thought UMass could drop much further, but the Sporting News says the existence of the program in the FBS is in doubt when the Minuteman leave the MAC after 2015.
