No conspiracy theory. To have a conspiracy theory, you must first have a conspiracy.
We will wait and see. But I'm comfortable betting that's precisely the way it will go.
I agree that there is no real conspiracy theory here. Instead, this is straight-up crackpottery.

In theory I have no trouble with "rating" colleges. In practice I'm sure they will F it up beyond all recognition.
Quote:Plus, many schools have incredible individual departments, while others suck. You can't give a university-wide rating when the quality of their individual departments can vary so greatly.
If you're giving kids federal loans to attend than yes you can. The schools can fix or drop the terrible departments.

I suspect that was tongue in cheek by the op but...
I would bet dollars to dough-nuts that any system the Obama regime would implement would include metrics for "diversity" of the student body, "availability" of reproductive services yadda yadda yadda..
Instead they should measure the $ of kids who stay current on their student loan payments, who complete their education, and who maintain a certain level of accredation.

SadlyI think you're right on... The risk for corruption and blackmail outweigh the potential gain from holding school accountable for federal loans given to students.

Gee, 5+ years in and you're just asking this question?
I think this is great. Might do some real damage to the higher ed industry.

Why would the federal government rate colleges? Some are private and some are owned by the various states. The free market rates both colleges as a whole as well as individual departments within colleges. The Feds have zero interest in it unless they want to rate them insofar as a points system for federal job applications. As far as loans are concerned, I thing the feds should get out of that business. If they stay in, they clearly need to tighten it up. Require a long term business plan, a wage lien, military service or some kind of collateral. Using a rating system is inequitable and more expensive. Not many people live near colleges that would be considered "higher rated" so they would have to borrow more money for room and board to go away to school when they could stay at home and go to a local school and work for money without paying rent.

everyone should be worried about this. colleges and universities would become the playthings of the executive branch, and even if you are the wooliest of the wooly liberals, you should stop and think about what a governmental ratings bureau, as part of the executive branch, would look like with a republican in the white house.

Why would the federal government rate colleges?
Because we the tax payers end up financing an enormous chunk of the schools tuition take.

You and I agree here but that's not going to happen..

Government ratings? I am certain there will be no politics involved in such a rating and that money will play no part.

RE: Colleges Rattled as Obama Seeks Rating System
Once the FED controls the flow of money to the Schools it can then dictate what these schools will teach. Doing it through a "ratings" system and letting that seep into accreditation to remain eligible for the Federal largess is the next logical step.
Welcome to the new America, comrades!
