" I also think that one of the '57 NIT era players that was a strong player wore #33 too. I just can't remember who."

According to Trip's Tigers website [http://tripstigers.com/] in 1956-57, Eddie Wells from Indianapolis, IN wore #33 that year. Anyone have any different info?

It was a different time, but I'd take Antonio over JJ any day.

Thanks, I appreciate you looking that up and reminding me re:TripsTigers. I was a little off. That's not who I was thinking of, it was Skip Wolfe who played immediately after the NIT team. TripsTigers is invaluable for easy to research info. I should have it bookmarked instead of having to be reminded of it.

No problem! I enjoyed figuring it out. It's always fun to hunt down some arcane tidbit, especially when it involves the Tigers! I usually end up learning a dozen or so new things while in pursuit of the original item. It keeps me off the streets... and, there's not much else to do sports-wise (based on my interests) during this time of the year.

Now I'm gonna go see what I can learn about Skip Wolfe!

No. 10 may be the best number for us.

No. 2 may be right behind number 10.

I've had a strong opinion that after this run of players, Alvin Wright,  Andre Turner, Bill Laurie, Otis Jackson, that #10 should be reserved for the starting point guard and make that number really special. Tony Matlock would have also been a natural fit for #10 also, but he chose 20.

Unfortunately, too much time has now passed for the link between the PG position and the number 10 to be significant.

....just one old guy's opinion.

I grew up thinking number 10 automatically was a PG #

Right.

There was that string of really strong #10s that played that position. It just seemed like a "reserved" number for the position. To add to the mystic, all except Laurie were local kids.

I was pretty young with Forrest was playing, but the Puxico connection was so strong, all of those guys names were like the local equivalent of Bob Cousy/Bill Russell. I think that Forrest was the 2nd Puxico player behind Elmore Fortner.

Yeah, I was 5 to 9 when Arnold was here, but I definitely remember seeing him play. I recall Fortner's name, but not seeing him play.

#35
would be tough to beat.

You could have a hell of starting 5 with;
PG Darius Washington
SG Billy Smith
SF Adonis Thomas
PF Sylvester Gray
PF Larry Kenon

Would lead the NCAA in rebounding for sure.

#35
would be tough to beat.

You could have a hell of starting 5 with;
PG Darius Washington
SG Billy Smith
SF Adonis Thomas
PF Sylvester Gray
PF Larry Kenon

Would lead the NCAA in rebounding for sure.

would Darius ever pass the ball? That would be a nice team tho.

#12 Mike Butler, one of the all time greats wore that number, had to look 3 three times. Can't believe he was overlooked.
#15 Mackie Don Smith and Don Holcombe
#22 James Douglas
#23 James "Tweety" Jackson
#24 Herb Hilliard the first African American Tiger, I think that was his number.

If some has an media guide, double check the last two and James Douglas he might have been #32

The list of numbers I provided only went back to the 72 season. All the players you mentioned were before that. Douglass wore 43 one season and 44 for 2 seasons. James Jackson was 23. Hilliard was 24.
