A new March Madness
My imagination has been spurred by the buzz around the Power 5 reforming the NCAA to allow them to distance themselves from the others. One of the last bastions of generosity for the Power 5 has been the shared monies from the NCAA basketball tournament.

If they can create their own new division and legislature for football, why not basketball too? What would a separate "elite" tournament look like?

So, there are currently 65 teams in the Group of 5...

Would all of them get a shot in a 65 team tournament?

Would they take the top 32 (approximately half of their teams) and run a 5-round tournament?

Would they take conference tourney champs (plus conference regular season champs if the two teams are not the same)...and then the rest as at-large schools to make a field of 16 (maybe 9 auto-bids on average, plus 7 at-large teams)? Could you imagine the hype over THAT Sweet 16? Plus, it would put the conference tournaments back on the map as MUST SEE viewing if one of the coveted 16 spots were available through a conference tourney championship?

um, no. A P5 basketball tournament would be a complete and utter joke. I do think you could see like all 10 fbs conferences and the top 8-10 other conferences breaking away in basketball.

I do think there will be some changes. I think for 1, you're going to find the first 4 games going to all of the worst 8 conference champs.

More likely eliminate the first round entirely ~ it was a political compromise that the P5, and likely the broadcast partner, would be happy to see the end of.

Something like the FBS and a selection of six BBall conferences could fill 64 spots with the tournament champion and best regular season school from each conference and the balance at-large. That still nets out to more spaces for the P5.

no because like it or not- the smaller conferences are a big part of what makes March Madness. It's not going to be like only 10-11 conferences- that's pretty much a guarantee. Getting it down to about 20 conferences total still leaves about 10-11 extra spots- which a lot of those would go to the P5 conferences.

I've said this before: If the P5 ever starts its own hoops tournament, the smart play is to have a committee that invites both P5 and non-P5 teams, no autobids, to a 64-team tournament. The non-P5 teams would want to play in that tournament rather than an NCAA-controlled tournament with no P5 teams.

I don't see this flying at all....esp since teams like UCONN, Cincy, Gtown, XU, etc would be left out. Nobody would go for this....

Maybe Penn State needs to worry about not screwing little boys instead of dreaming up ways to screw other universities.
