Hill Country Classic
River Cities Rivalry
Saint Cities showdown

I like those first three on your list.

Me too. I like the Balcones reference.
Too few people probably know about the Balcones. "River War" and "Hill Country Classic" are probably the best two that I've heard so far. "River War" sounds the best

No need for us to give up our motto.

I-35 rivalry with an armadillo trophy.

However, name the football game something special and give it a traveling trophy. Potential ideas include Golden Boot, a river paddle or canoe, or the golden 'chancla' -- used for recreation in San Marcos and discipline in San Antonio

How about, "BATTLE FOR THE RATTLE"? Nice stained wood base for the trophy, and a bronze/gold rattlesnake coiled up on top?

I like the idea of the cannon-- The Camino Real Cannon.

The Camino Real (Kings Highway) the originally connected San Antonio and San Marcos.

The Talons began the Fall 1970 football season with a blast as they introduced their newest spirit project, a muzzleloader cannon. The cannon was fired by the Talons cannon crew to signal UNT touchdowns, kick-off, half-time, and the end of home football games as well as special occasions such as University Day. Boomer is a Civil War replica, about two-thirds to scale of a six-pound cannon. It was modeled after cannons originally used as light horse battery by confederate cavalry. Talons worked for more than three years to gild the cannon, receiving donations from many campus organizations to help complete the project. The cannon barrel was cast in Dallas, and Crawford Sloan of the physics shop helped build its carriage. The carriage was built on a trailer and equipped for highway travel so the Talons could take it on road trips. Although Boomer did go to some away games, many stadiums will not allow it because it fires gun powder rather than blank cartridges.

I didn't even know you guys had a cannon. I assume UTSA has one as well. How much does something like that cost?

Neither of these cannons belong to our teams. The top one is 'El Capitan' -- the cannon trophy between FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo.

The Alamo Cannon was just some random photo that I found.

Texas State's ARMY ROTC has a cannon detail that fires everytime we score. I'm having troubles finding pictures of it right now.

Per an email sent from our athletic director, Lynn Hickey, to a Roadrunner fan's inquiry, a cannon has been in the works since the inception of our football program, and entirely appropriate considering the Alamo is virtually walking distance away. However, the Alamodome presents a set of problems.

1) It's a city-owned venue, so we would need approval from the city to operate the cannon within the dome.
2) Smoke and noise in a confined space is another issue, as most schools play in open-air stadiums owned by the university, and don't have that issue.
3) Cost. Higher insurance premiums would be incurred due to the increased liability of setting off additional explosives in the dome.

Long story short... It's unfortunately not much of an option for us right now.

Btw, for the UNT faithful, enjoyed my visit to UNT last year and enjoyed your stadium. Nice cannon too. I just feel you guys could've come up with a better name than "Boomer" for it though. I associate "Boomer" with OU. Just my two cents. Still love the cannon regardless, and wish we could have one for our games.

The Chisholm Trail Shootout. There's a name that has historic grounding, geographic significance and creates a vivid image of the great state of TEXAS.

We've beaten vanderbilt the last three times we've played, 2001, '02, and '05. All at their place, good to have them at JRF in 2015.

the last time MT and Vandy played, it ended like this....
