RE: ESPN College Sports counting down top 25
Clemens, Swindell, Will Clark will all probably be top-10 if not top-5. Not sure what exactly the criteria for inclusion is? Does it mean any MLB player who made a big impact on the CWS? Or does it have to be someone that was a top MLB player who also made a big impact on the CWS?
Depending on interpretation, that could include Savery, Niemann, Humber, Holt, Aardsma (Berkman didn't have a big impact in Omaha and I don't think Jose Cruz Jr. would qualify... did he ever make the CWS)?

Cruz Jr. did not make the CWS, but he's probably Shock G's biggest recruit ever at Rice, at least in terms of a known name and stud helping get the last two decades of success started at Rice...
And regarding ESPN's list, I gotta assume that Dave Winfield will be in the top 5, as well...

David Winfield (Minnesota => Yankees) will probably be on it.
Beat me to it...

Non-Rice guys, I'd think that guys like Winfield, Ventura, Bonds, Incaviglia, Garciaparra, Francona, Freddy Lynn and Bob Horner would all be on that list
Did Huston Street ever do anything in MLB? He certainly did a lot in Omaha as I recall.

Seems like what they're trying to do is list the best MLB players, in ascending order, who at least had a decent CWS.
How about Todd Helton? He certainly had a solid MLB career but can't recall any stats of his from the '95 CWS.

I don't see any stats, but did find some game stories about the Vols' 1995 Omaha experience, their first CWS appearance in 44 years. Helton got the Game 1 pitching start over R.A. Dickey, and pitched a complete game, as Tennessee beat Clemson, 3-1.
The eventual champions, Cal State-Fullerton -- managed by Augie Garrido and led by Mark Kotsay -- hammered Dickey in their next game, 11-1. Helton is not mentioned in the article.
Helton hit a homerun and an RBI single in their elimination game 6-2 victory over Stanford.
Fullerton blanked the Vols, 11-0, in Tennessee's final game in the 1995 CWS. Scant mention of Helton is that game article:
Quote:Fullerton (senior, left-handed) pitcher Ted Dixon ... stymied Tennessee's attack, stingily allowing five hits in eight innings to a lineup that had been hitting .310 and averaging eight runs per game.
"He threw strikes and kept the ball low," Tennessee first baseman Todd Helton said. "It wasn't like he was overpowering or deceptive. We just didn't hit the ball."

How about Phil Nevin?
1992 CWS MVP and drafted by Astros and spent 12 years in majors.

There wasn't an explicit criteria given prior to voting. The only rule was the the player had to play in the CWS - not even an explicit requirement of reaching the majors, but people who only follow MLB will recognize all the names.
Different voters weighted attributes differently. My ballot skewed toward MLB impact while using college impact to sort within tiers. Another voter barely considered MLB performance in his votes. That in and of itself should lead to some interesting discussions as the results are released, like it did when we debated the final list!

Cool. I still think Rice's 1997 CWS outcome would have been different if only Joseph Cathey had beaten out that bunt attempt (with Berkman in the on-deck circle).......
