Tailgaite Lots
One of the big issues with TU's new stadium is parking. The only viable solution right now is to use off campus lots and bus in fans or have them walk a mile or 2. Yes an 80k stadium was once on campus but that was when the area was less densely populated and now there will be more parking restrictions int eh neighborhood.

My question, how does you school handle parking. Particularly schools that have limited on campus options in more populated areas (Cinci, SMU?)? DO people ***** and moan about having to take shuttles? How does it work?

Thanks.

Whatever you do, don't resort to parking deck tailgates. They just aren't the same.

One of the big reasons I argued against staying in the Dome. Simply does not feel like a real college FBall experience.

SMU has a 5 story parking garage nearby and we are close to the DART rail line. Neighbors get pissed but alot of people park in residential areas.

RE: Tailgaite Lots
UCF uses nearly every avaiilable parking lot on campus on game-days. Only student parking garages and some administrative lots are off-limits. Some of the lots make for a decent hike to the stadium, but (I think) all of the campus parking is free. The lots closest to the stadium are donor-only. Tailgating is not permitted in or on top of any parking garage. The longer walks probably suck, but it's pretty common on many campuses I've been to. Off the top of my head, Clemson, Penn State, UF, VT, GT all had pretty good walks to their stadium (depending where you parked), but nothing unreasonable. Why UCF doesn't use the student shuttle buses to ferry fans from the south lots to the stadium, I don't know.

I don't know what Tulane's situation is like, but they need to use any and every possible parking spot on campus on game days to get as many people on campus as possible. Using residential neighborhoods is only going to cause problems. The neighborhoods near UCF are supposed to be off-limits for game day parking, although some have tried.

Tulane Stadium. Hosted about 40 Sugar Bowls and several Super Bowls. Temple played in the first Sugar Bowl at the site.

Umm... not only do we use shuttles to bring people from the south side of campus and research park, we also have the tram that goes around the entire circle.

UCF Park 'n Ride

Courtesy Tram

The courtesy tram operations will be provided on a continuous basis starting four hours prior to published game start and ending two hours after the game concludes. For more information about the tram's stops and a map, visit http://www.ucfgameday.com.

Shuttles are working fine at just about every stadium in Texas-I have personally used them at Tech, A&M, TCU and Baylor. They are all FREE while I pay over $100 for my parking at SMU.

Tulane has won 3 SEC football championships, more than Miss St, Kentucky, Arkansas, South Carolina, I think Vandy, and of course Texas A&M and Missouri.

Can the University get some Express Streetcars? Run some from lots down the line? Tulane and Syracuse are very similar with lack of large lots nearby. The tailgating suffers in Cuse as smaller lots really "segment" the scene. Cuse use shuttles primarily or folks walk in.

Tailgaite Lots
SMU makes use of campus parking garages (no tailgating), off-campus parking in neighborhoods (one side of each street is allowed for parking), parking across 75 at the DART station, and taking DART itself (free shuttle from/to the station).

Tailgating is centralized on the Boulevard, one of college football's top tailgating scenes. My guess is that Tulane will eventually centralize tailgating and have a fantastic scene as well.

RE: Tailgaite Lots
Couple observations about Tulane's situation...

First off you are only talking about 30K and many of them are on campus...you have to set up one of the Quads nearby for students as a gathering place before games.

Secondly, not EVERYONE has to tailgate at THEIR car....what's key about creating an atmosphere is quality not quantity. The lot near the baseball stadium should be a main tailgate lot.

I would try to get Audubon Blvd shut down during gamedays between Freret and Willow (ECU closes down 14th St)....where there is parking on the street. With the two Quads next to this section, it could create quite an atmosphere on campus a block and a half from the stadium. Then the shuttles can drop off folks there.

Creating a "community" area will help keep folks off the side streets and as someone said, all available parking on campus should be utilized.

Audubon BLVD doesn't run between Freret and Willow, tmk. They will be restricting access to Audubon Blvd on gamedays to appease the NIMBYs, public streets are not always public I suppose.

At this point it has been announced that there will be designated tailgaite areas in the quads but you have to drop off all your gear at like 8 AM and in some instances you may not be able to pick it up until long after the game. There will also be some sort of TU tent setup, hoping it will be more like SMU/Ole Miss. They better not try to restrict booze consumption for undergrads as this is NOLA and these kids can get booze anywhere.

Like BC, all vehicles must be moved off campus the night before gamedays. Also like BC (and this is my speculation) I believe the NIMBYs will severely restrict our ability to play night games.

There will be some satellite lots as we own a medical complex nearby and there will probably be parking somewhere in Audubon Park. Also talk of using the Dome for satellite parking, which is a bit ironic. They will be limited parking in some of the surrounding neighborhoods, towing companies are going to get rich.

Finally, they will have a TU themed mardi gras float that will parade it's way to the stadium. Not sure if that is what the folks at Mardi Gras World were hired to create some sort of NOLA centric addition to the stadium. Our wonderful AD has also promised lots of NOLA themed food and restaurants serving inside the stadium.

No wifi yet.

NOLA food is a great idea....the Mardi Gras float thing seems a little cheesy....leave that stuff on Bourbon St, IMO.

I like the idea of having to get the tents out early and stay late, and closing off the streets...what seems like logistic nightmares actually creates an "atmosphere" that it is GAMEDAY...and its an event.

Sounds like the Quads will be the place to be...and I think limiting Night Games is not a bad idea (except maybe a Thursday or Friday night game)...because of the competition of folks coming into town with Bourbon St....they can head there AFTER the game, but start out on campus. Noon games are never good, but 3 or 4 would be great.

Well most floats go down St Charles, but I digress. It is a bit cheezy but in some ways I think it is meant to be, we shall see.

The night game issue has a lot to do with the heat early on in the season. Locals don;t really care about Bourbon Street and besides things don't really get going until about 10 PM for out of towners.

Yes the quads hopefully will be great. The only issue with the tailgaiting timing is that NOLA folks have a lot of choices and can be fickle, not to mention we are not exactly crushing it in the fan demand department (yet?). SO I worry whether that will keep people away, though you really just need one dedicated member of each tailgaite.

I am really looking forward to seeing it in person. The most important thing is to win FBall games, the rest will solve itself.

We have a Firday night game already scheduled against Cinci on Halloween, a must see event as NOLA is the best Halloween city in the nation. It's going ot be a shatshow, wait until you see all the characters.
