One small correction to that article:
The 2011 CUSA Championship Game was on ABC, not ESPN.

The last remaining piece of the cancer on our program is about to be removed. Maybe as early as tomorrow.

Great news! While under EJ the way he treated the qb's behind close doors was sickening.

Can you shed light on this or is it a wait and see approach first? I have a guess but it's truly a guess and not much else...if it involves SB, that would be my guess

I hope they return to a strong and solid program. I just spent $1,000 on renewing my season tickets. I support my university despite all the disappointment. I've found new joy in riding motorcycles over the last two years (haha?!).

I think USM will be much better this year. You guys had a lot of young and injured players last year. I also hear that Monken is a very good coach. It won't take long to get back. CUSA needs USM, especially in football.

ECU had a similar "down-period" under Thompson, then started clawimg out of that "muck" with the Holtz & McNeil eras. THIS is what I hope happens with USM. All the battles in DFS & The Rock, even predating the CUSA membership. Even though USM owns the series, there's just something right about ECU v USM.

Wow, that was some insider info there! No holdovers left from the EJ debacle.
If we can get just "average" OLine play, we can win several more games. We have a good QB in place. Just need to build confidence in him, and around him.

And that was the correct answer. Glad to see him gone. On a side note, he was "tied" for highest paid assistant on our staff at $200k a year and that odd part was that he didn't coach a position as he was the recruiting coordinator this past year which I do realize that was his salary when he was hired as Asst Head Coach under eLx12. I'm curious to see if we will now hire a position coach since we only had 8 assistants last year instead of the traditional 9.

RE: Southern Miss, Looking for a return to normal
I hope USM gets back because they were the standard for years for teams like mine to aspire. #1 program in their state and willing to play anyone at any time despite not having a huge budget. I think the hiring of Johnson may make it nearly impossible to ever get back to the glory years but with all the history and the talent in MS there is no reason USM won't be a solid competitor again soon.
With all the changes and hires over the last five years, USM has a lot more competition for recruits in it's region than it did just 5 to 10 years ago. During the stretch run they had, if a kid in the south didn't go to an SEC school (and some who had that option), USM was in the catbird's seat to get that kid. With the new FBS programs and a more competitive ULL, stAte, Ole Miss, etc. sharing the same turf it is not as easy to get that group of recruits that just miss playing in the SEC.
I am hoping they get back on track and that we can get some more games on the schedule in the future.

USM fired a coach with 14 straight winning seasons because going to bowl games and winning 7 to 8 games a year wasn't good enough. Well, the new normal at USM in football would love to have that terrible history back. USM football is irrelevant now and will more than likely stay that way.

Good post, thanks... you also nailed it with the end of USM's monopoly of non-SEC players. Everyone's got to work harder these days.

Hate it happened to USM. During their peak I never ran into one of their fans who lorded it over us or looked down their noses. They handled success very well and were respectful of opponents. That's a rarity these days.

Speak for yourself. Coach Bower was a great guy, but I never attached that much significance those irrelevant bowl games and seven-win seasons. Years and years of that crap never succeeded in advancing the program or the University in any meaningful way. And Bower's last season was just miserable... remember the Rice game? The fact that that team found six inferior teams to beat is really mind-boggling. It says more about Richard Giannini's ability to create an illusion of success than anything else.
No, the mistake was not firing Bower. The mistake was not keeping Fedora long enough, or, alternatively, not replacing him with another million-dollar coach. You get what you pay for, after all.
In hindsight, there was a battle between the people who were OK with a mediocre USM (Bower, Giannini, Hammond, etc.) and those who wanted more (Saunders, Fedora, etc.) and the bad guys won. Don't blame the Bower firing... that's what "they" want you to think.

RE: Southern Miss, Looking for a return to normal
I had to laugh a little when I read the title of this thread. When, not "if", USM returns to "normal" on the football field, that will be bad news to most of us in the conference, year in and year out. Being normal, for them , will be owning this conference. But, on the other hand, a "normal" USM is the single best thing that could happen to C-USA. I agree with SVHerd, however, I hope its after we play them in Hattiesburg this year.
