Well, the new normal at USM in football would love to have that terrible history back. USM football is irrelevant now and will more than likely stay that way.

Boo Hoo, you Bower Babies are a whiny lot. If we would have hired a competent AD instead of sticking with Mumbles we might have had a shot at the AAC instead we hired EJ and got ourselves stuck in this mess.

The sad thing is that we'll never be able to prove any of this. I feel certain that getting into the AAC or even the Big East would have had far-reaching benefits for USM and South Mississippi. But anyone who says that gets drowned out by a bunch of people who like to say "Gang of Five" a lot (as if the conference with the reigning men's basketball champ and Fiesta Bowl champ were really our peer).

Also, Bill McGillis is a boot-licking idiot. That dude had zero qualifications to be at USM, and his performance reflects that. He's not General Hammond- that I will grant him- but beyond that I just can't think of anything nice to say about him. He got skunked by Steven F. Austin and then hired a guy because of his sense of humor. Hey Bill, can I coach the golf team? I'm a funny guy, and I'm batting at least .970 in golf. I hardly ever miss any more!

Really? You're impressed by the job McGillis is doing? Please share whatever good news it is that I seem to be unaware of. So far, my impression of BM is:

-He got skunked by SFA.

-He made noise about Reed Green, but nothing tangible has happened or even been announced.

-He wants to move the softball stadium.

-He takes out his frustrations on Britton Banowsky, a man who helped Louisville, TCU, Memphis, Cincy, ECU, etc. into much better situations.

I'm sorry... I realize we face some difficult problems. But nobody making what BM makes should have any room for excuses. Solve the problems, you ugly ************.

Bano helped out Louisville?? Don't think so. That was Tom Jurich.
Bano helped out TCU? Beep, wrong answer. Try Chris Conte.
Memphis, Cincy, ECU? Bwahaha!! Nope.
What McGillis should do is what Jurich, Conte, & Holland (or whoever the ECU AD was who got ECU into the AAC) by overcoming the circumstances and bolting at first available opportunity.

I think we'll be mediocre this season, but pretty good next year. we will see if we get our coach hijacked after that.

the thing that the bower-fedora-jacka$$-monken travail has taught us is that we can't take success for granted if we ever get it back again. we should have known . . . it's mississippi, and even at that, the deck is stacked against us.

Well, if BillyMac is a budget-balancing bean-counter, he may see no point to upgrading an arena that we're pretty much filling up anyway. He sure did talk about it for a while there, and then he shut up about it. I find that a little bit ominous... like, somebody got to him or something.

The other thing I find scary is that USM knows me, and knows my address, and they just don't ever ask me for money. I've gotten offers of free hot dogs, birthday cards from Seymour and the cheerleaders, etc. but what I haven't gotten (at least not recently) is a request for real cash. I mean, if anyone at USM really cared about fundraising, don't you think they'd pull a list of people that included me? There are majors at USM that lead to a high income. There are lists of people who've bought tickets in the past. We ***** about money, but then we expect people to just spontaneously send in checks.

I used to hate it when people bitched about the College Board, but now I'm starting to wonder... did we just scare the crap out of too many Black Bears and Leghumpers in the '90s? It's like, everyone we hire into a leadership position lately is a frickin' spy or something.

I sure hope USM gets back to their winning ways very soon. This conference really needs the old Southern Miss.

it will take less than a season to go back to 1k pd and 500 butts....we are missing the boat on making the experience better....there are too many things that could make it better....and we just are sitting on our arse....I just don't get how that hasn't moved forward with our recent success.....it's beyond my comprehension......

RE: Southern Miss, Looking for a return to normal
Recruiting and recruits have changed a lot in the last 15 years for USM. USM use to just have to fend off Tulane for recruits. And LA Tech and ULL to some extent. Now with the rise of Ark State and new programs such as South Alabama and GA State. Also Troy moving up in 2002 has made the neighborhood a little crowded and recruits that may have just been thought of that would go to USM now has several more properties to look at.

I've heard that argument and I don't completely accept it. Up until about 18 months ago, USM was a cut above all of those schools, in performance, facilities, conference affiliation, etc.

The scary thing is that Tulane and Memphis passing us up, and Tech, UNT, etc. catching up with us, it will be getting hard to recruit... but I don't think we've seen the effects of it yet.

Monken does seem to be doing OK as a recruiter, so maybe we haven't completely squandered our advantage

you're both right.....toss in what's going to happen p5/g5 and it's only going to get tougher.

however, we've always gotten the leftovers to begin with...2/3 stars have always been our bread and butter....

the next two years for USM is going to be very important....the residual downfall is further reaching than just sports....

It sure seems like Monken has been pulling some good Juco / transfer recruits recently. If he's taking a "now or never" approach, I think that's probably a good thing.

like last year, my biggest concern is escaping the msu/bama games injury free....and yeah, he ain't no dummy.....he's going to do what he can to recruit based on his schema in an accelerated fashion....it's what we are now.....
