I respect the man for the immeasurable economic impact he had on our nation and the world, but he was a nasty person.

So was Newton by all accounts.

Edison was a dick who stole a lot of ideas off his assistants, just ask Tesla.

And don't get me started on Lincoln.

i'm curious......

I thought you knew all about those times. You should probably name John Wilkes Booth in his place.

The things people complain about are things that probably any of us would have done in the same situation, if we had been able to find the strength. And the good will that he showed toward his former enemies after the fall of Apartheid is way more than enough to overcome that.

It may be a factor that through rugby you learn a lot about the story that is not well understood by all. I've had the pleasure of having a beer or a few in Pretoria with Francois Pienaar (the Matt Damon character in Invictus) and I can tell you that the love and respect for Mandela is well deserved.

RE: Best People in History
"Best" depends on the criteria used to determine bestness:
holy person, contribution to the advancement of mankind, great artist, great thinker, great inventor, great warrior, great leader etc.
many who were the "best" did have foibles.

Winston Churchill
William Shakespeare
Galileo
Copernicus
Beethoven
Mozart
Charles Dickens
JS Bach
Lewis and Clark
Alexander Graham Bell
Wright Brothers
Charles Darwin
Louis Pasteur
Marie Curie

I'm still waiting on john to tell me why Lincoln was a best people pick. I know that all he knows about the Civil War is that the South just wanted to keep slaves, and Lincoln freed them, but he doesn't know the stuff the revisionists refuse to add.

You do realize that in order to be revised, it has to be rewritten, right? I grew up in an era where political correctness wasn't even a twinkle in an eye... I've read the history of 19th century America the way it was written years ago. You've come up in an era that read about this history after it was altered. If you want to think that the past was all fabricated, and then accurately changed 140 years later then be my guest, but your hate for that era will always be unwarranted. And just so you're aware of how great Lincoln really was, he got assassinated before he could follow out his plan to send every single African man, woman, and child back to Africa. And not the North, nor the South disagreed with his decision outside of a very small, single digit percentage of people from both regions.

this is what I am talking about. certain people are so hell bent on hate because they don't want to admit the reality of the past.

Lincoln kept this nation together, oversaw the end of slavery and oversaw the expansion of the federal govt into its modern form. he is a key reason why america became the superpower that it is today.
