RE: 99 Days....
99

The song "99 Red Balloons" is fun and catchy, but is actually a protest song. What German singer is credited with singing it?

Nena. The song was originally known as "99 Luftballons" and sung in German. The lyrics talked about ninety-nine balloons released into the air, only to be misconstrued as an invasion, so the military takes action. It was a protest against the unnecessary force often used by military forces. Whether you care more about the message or the fun tune, "99 Red Balloons" is a great song!

It's late at night. You are hungry, but you only have a couple of dollars in your pocket. Suddenly, you realize you can get a whole meal at Wendy's with only a few dollars - from the Value Menu! Which of the following is NOT and has never been on the Wendy's 99 cent Super Value Menu?

Two apple pies. Apple pies are found at McDonald's, not Wendy's. Wendy's was founded by Dave Thomas in 1969. His daughter Melinda had picked up the nickname Wendy, so Dave named his restaurant chain after her. The Super Value Menu was introduced in 1989, the first offered by a fast food chain. However, not all items on the Super Value Menu are 99 cents anymore. The prices of some items have been raised and range from $1.19 cents to $1.69.

Two agents, the bumbling 86 and cool competent 99, who worked for CONTROL, were teamed together to fight the forces of KAOS in what popular 1960s television show?

Get Smart. It was interesting to note that while Agent 86 (played by Don Adams) was often called by his name Maxwell Smart, Agent 99 (played by Barbara Feldon) never had an actual name. In fact, when the two characters wed near the end of the show, the bride's name could not be heard during the vows because one of the guests was snoring. Keeping Agent 99 nameless was sometimes a challenge for the writers, but I have read that they had fun doing it.

The hit show "CHiPS" from the late 1970s and early 1980s returned with a made for TV movie in 1998. Both Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada returned to reprise their roles and the show was called "CHiPS '99".
true. "CHiPS" was a story about two California motorcycle cops. It was very popular, especially among teenage girls, because the two stars were so good looking. In "CHiPS '99", Ponch (Estrada) returned to the force to help his friend Jon (Wilcox) in a difficult car thief case.

Which of the following is the name of element 99 on the Periodic Table of Elements?

Einsteinium. Einsteinium, named after great Physicist Albert Einstein, was discovered in December 1952 by Albert Ghiorso. With an atomic symbol of Es, Einsteinium is metallic and highly radioactive.

CIX is the Roman Numeral for 99.

True. XC indicates ninety, because it is ten (X) before one hundred ©. IX indicates nine because it is one (I) before ten (X). Therefore XCIX is indeed the Roman numeral for 99.

Even if you were not a hockey fan, you probably know the most famous, and some would say greatest, hockey player of the late 20th century. Incidentally, he wore the number 99. Who was this hockey dynamo?

Wayne Gretzky. Wayne Gretzky, middle name Douglas, was born January 26, 1961 in Ontario, Canada. He played from 1979 to 1999 for various teams, including the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers. Since retirement, Gretzky has served as director for at least two Olympic Hockey teams and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame November 22, 1999.

If you live in the northeastern part of the United States of America, you may have eaten at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant and Pub. The address of the original location was 99 State Street, but in which city could it be found?

Boston, Massachusetts. The Ninety-Nine Restaurant and Pub was founded in 1952 by Charlie Doe. In 1962, the main location moved to Woburn, Massachusetts. Now, it exists in all of Massachusetts, as well as the Providence, Rhode Island and Manchester, New Hampshire areas. In addition to the usual pub fare, Ninety-Nine also served hamburgers, steaks and rare fish specialties. The parent company of the chain is O'Charley's, Inc.

Which of the following is NOT true about the number 99?

It is the most chosen lottery number.. The card game Ninety-Nine can be played by two to four people with a standard deck of cards. It is a game of taking tricks and bidding. The '99 Names of God' are also known as the '99 Attributes of God'. They are names, adjectives, word constructs and others that can be found in the Qur'an and Sunnah. The number actually exceeds 99, but the top ones, or 'Best Names' are included in the '99 Names of God'. In 1989, Hershey's Kisses were the 5th most popular candy in the world. They have also been available in over 30 other flavors besides plain milk chocolate.

Which of the following is NOT true about the number 99?

It is a prime number.. 99 can be divided by 11 and 9, 33 and 3, as well as 1 and itself, so therefore, it is not a prime number. 99 x 99 = 9801. 98 + 01 = 99. This is why 99 is a Kaprekar number. A palindromic number is one that is the same forwards or backwards. A repdigit is any number that repeat the same single digit. 99 is also the sum of the sums of divisors of the first eleven integers.

Which of the following happened in the year 99 BC?

The Latin poet and philosopher Lucretius was born.. Lucretius was a Roman writer, known for his work "On the Nature of Things", a poem intended to help men overcome superstitions and their fear of death. It was split into six books with two main parts. The Senate passed their resolution forbidding human sacrifice in 98 BC. Saint Joseph was born in 97 BC. Tigranes became King of Armenia in 95 BC.

Which of the following happened in the year 99 A.D.?

Mirrors were first made from glass backed with tin.. The other three actually happened in 96 A.D. Prior to this time, a mirror was just a sheet of metal that had been polished. It wasn't a very good reflector, but it did the job. The Romans found that glass backed with tin produced a good reflection. Improvements in the quality of glass over time have improved the quality of mirrors. Modern mirrors are usually backed with aluminum instead of tin.

Which of the following did NOT happen in the year 1999 AD?

President Bill Clinton was found guilty by the United States Senate in his impeachment trial.. While Clinton was impeached, he was not found guilty. Britney Spears has released many albums, but her debut album was "Baby One More Time" was released in 1999. "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" is Episode 1 in the "Star Wars" movies, released 22 years after the original "Star Wars" movie "A New Hope" (which was episode 4) appeared in theatres. Lance Armstrong went on to win the Tour de France 7 times consecutively before retiring in 2005. He was stripped of all seven titles in 2012.

The Ninety-Nines is an organization of women pilots that was founded in 1999.

False. The International Organization was actually founded in 1929 by women pilots. 99 of the 117 female pilots attended the founding meeting. Amelia Earhart was a member, as well as Fay Gillis Wells, Elsie MacGill, Bobbi Trout, Jeana Yeager, and Linda Godwin. Today, the organization has spread to 30 countries and has approximately 6000 members.

I guess I wasn't clear. #The names of... /was the original statement. My response, NA/SA was questioning the statement's accuracy.

The Oldsmobile 98

Quote:The Oldsmobile 98 (originally Series 90; a.k.a. Ninety-Eight) was a full-size automobile and the flagship model of the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. The name first appeared in 1941 and was used again after American consumer automobile production resumed post-World War II. It was, as it would remain, the top-of-the-line model, with lesser Oldsmobiles having lower numbers such as the A-body 66 and 68, and the B-body 76 and 78.

Speculation has led to a romantic Indian myth; to the mistaken belief that it was 96 miles to the nearest Cherokee settlement of Keowee; to a counting of creeks crossing the main road leading from Lexington, SC, to Ninety-Six, SC; to an interpretation of a Welsh expression, "nant-sych," meaning "dry gulch." However, no one is able to confirm that Robert Goudey was Welsh, English, Scottish, or German. An examination of early maps indicates markings such as "30" and "60" and "90" at different points, possibly indicating "chains." Since Ninety-Six was located in Clarendon Parish, it is possible that Parish linear measurements used in England were used on colonial maps to measure distances in "chains". In England, according to a British and Welsh booklet designating linear measurements, Parish maps used a rule of "4 chains to the inch." In using that parish rule on an early map of colonial South Carolina, 90 "chains" on a map would probably cover approximately 24 inches, the map distance from "Saxe Gotha" (modern Lexington, SC) to Ninety-Six. Using the same measurements for the distance from Ninety-Six to the Savannah River, the measurement would be approximately 2.5 inches or 6 "chains," hence 96. Even so, the origin of the name, "Ninety-Six," likely remains a mystery.

The Ninety-Five Theses

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ninety-Five_Theses

Quote:The Ninety-Five Theses (original Latin: Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum) were written by Martin Luther in 1517 and are widely regarded as the initial catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. The disputation protests against clerical abuses, especially nepotism, simony, usury, pluralism, and the sale of indulgences.

RE: 95 Days....
Your countdown is off my one day. Following this formula, you will post Thursday morning, August 28 that there is 1 day to go. But the game is Saturday the 30. Just an FYI.

Dare I ask how this factoid became known? 01-wingedeagle

Victor Hugo's Ninety-Three

http://rebirthofreason.com/Articles/Prit...hree.shtml

Quote:Victor Hugo is best known for Les Misérables and Notre Dame de Paris, two classics of Romantic literature. But Hugo's final novel, Ninety-Three, is a work of such power, scope and passion that it ranks with the most famous of his works. The theme of the novel, as Ayn Rand wrote in her own 'Introduction to Ninety-Three' (republished in The Romantic Manifesto) is "man's loyalty to values." The background: 1793, France. It is the year of the Terror, of Robespierre, of the guillotine, of Louis XVI's head. The forces of revolution will stop at nothing to continue their progress and eradicate the counter-revolutionaries who would seek to return France to monarchy. The future of France, and indeed of Europe, lies in the balance.
