Conference tournaments
A couple of interesting scores today as some tournaments begin a day earlier than us.

A&M got shut out by Arkansas so they're eliminated from the SEC tournament (and the NCAA tournament too most likely).

#1 seed Indiana State lost its opener in the MVC tournament.

And NC State lost to North Carolina 4-3 in an ACC play-in game, likely ending its season as well.

RE: Conference tournaments
NC State definitely eliminated from post-season. Amazing for a consensus Top 10 preseason pick with arguably the #1 pitcher (Rondon) and position player (Turner) in the nation-- both likely picked in the first half of the first round.

Most of the pundits still think the Aggies are in, but they're at the mercy of the Committee...and the bubble busters. Indiana State losing means they will get one of the remaining at large births.

The tournament is double elimination, so Indiana St. is not out of the tournament yet.

RE: Conference tournaments
I wonder about how much group think impacts the selection process. The SEC really wants ten slots. Your eyes tell you that one or two of those teams should not be included. The $EC/ESPN people seem to want everyone to bow down to the only conference that matters. I don't buy it. Lots of people in the industry want to be liked by the $EC/ESPN folks. Look for the little guy to be sold out by little guys on the committee looking to gain favor from those $EC/ESPN folks.

I wonder how much expectations/draftitis had to do with the sinking of the USS NC State? Having two first rounders in their draft year is both a blessing bad a curse ($1 to the Drive-by-Truckers).

The Big 12 Tourney is on Fox SW Alt. and FCS this week.

The Big Ten Tourney is on the BTN this week. For some reason they skip games 1,2, and 5.

The ACC Tournament is on several channels this week.

The SEC Tournament is on several channels this week. Strangely you need a Comcast Sports Net affiliate to see the evening or Friday's games.

Any others?

Indiana State with another bad loss today in the MVC tournament so they're 2 and 'cue. Their RPI is still good so maybe they get into the NCAA tournament but they're certainly in the nervous and waiting category now. Evansville also went 0-2 at that tournament so the MVC is going to mess up everybody if they get multiple bids (Dallas Baptist is another bubble team out of that conference).

Arkansas beat Ole Miss, and GT beat Miami. This should help us a bit.

Won't be very difficult for me to root for UConn against UH tomorrow as I went to high school with their star catcher for two years. If the Coogs lose tomorrow and we take care of business, I'd have to think we're sitting pretty.

Brock Hartson is having another good outing for UTSA. Eight strikeouts through seven innings, matching his complete game total against Rice. 103 pitches, so another complete game seems unlikely.

Edit: Strikes out the side in the 8th for 11 strikeouts so far.
Hartson goes 8.1 innings total with 12 stikeouts. USTA wins 4-1.

SC's RPI is only .0003 more than ours, so if they should lose to MSU, we would slip into 8th.

RE: Conference tournaments
Am I correct that in a very simplistic way, I am now fans of every team that Rice has played outside of conference play? Each win should improve their winning percentage and opponent's winning percentage is a RPI factor, no?

That's how I see it.

Yep.. OWP is the largest factor, in fact.

RPI = 0.25 * aWP + 0.5 * OWP + 0.25 * OOWP

aWP = adjusted Win Percentage (road win = 1.4 games, home win = 0.7 games, etc.)
OWP = Opponents' Win Pct
OOWP = Opponents' Opponents' Win Pct

ETA: and for tournament rooting purposes, cheer for FIU to come back and face us again, and UAB to come out of the other side - they have the best WPs in the conference outside of ours.

We're not competing with SC, who have a host site locked up, and likely a national seed as well, regardless of RPI. Compare their overall resume to ours-- there's no comparison. Of course, Kendall is now pitching MSU as a national seed replacement for Florida...despite the reality that MSU's RPI is currently #31. Uh, don't think so.

Consecutive two out doubles tie the game for Southern Mississippi. Now 8-8 with two outs in bottom 9th
