Sampson hire earns Houston high grade in offseason rankings
ESPN.com college basketball writer Jeff Goodman put together his personal rankings of 2014 college basketball hires and Houston's hire of former OU coach Kelvin Sampson was graded as one of the best pickups of the offseason.
Goodman gave the Cougars a "B+" for luring Sampson away from the NBA and back into the college game. According to Goodman, only two high-major schools -- Virginia Tech (Buzz Williams) and Auburn (Bruce Pearl) -- made better hires than Houston did by grabbing Sampson.

We had signature victories last season with a NOT so good of a coach... You'll see more W's with Sampson this coming season.

i honestly think he was the best possible higher possible as well as the least riskiest,
some liked john lucas but he was all risk, the upside was there (he runs camps that include almost all the mcdonalds all-american and built relationships with a lot of them) but that doesnt necessarily mean they would sign with us and doesn't mean we would win even if we did get them (already had a stacked roster and werent winning)
no one we could have hired could have had a better resume or even come remotely close. and he is known as one of the best x and o's coach in the game and look at the rockets the had a dominate record with him and borderline collapse without.
but any espn insider know the grades tulsa & usf got?

Sure. See blurbs below.
USF
Hire: Orlando Antigua -- The initial pick was Steve Masiello, but that fell through because of a résumé issue and the Bulls went with Kentucky assistant Antigua, who is also a former Pittsburgh player and assistant. We all know it's easy to be a John Calipari assistant these days, but Antigua has strong contacts in a variety of places and should be able to bring talent to the Tampa area.
Grade: B+
Tulsa
Hire: Frank Haith -- The Missouri coach made a smart move by getting out of Dodge, or, in this case, Columbia before he was run out of town. Haith took the Tigers to the NCAA tournament in his first two seasons at Mizzou, but went to the NIT this past season and would have been fortunate to get to the NIT next season. Personally, if I were hiring at Tulsa, I would have gone with an up-and-comer in a job like this one.
Grade: C-
