Was in Philadelphia last week and it was a rather pleasant experience. Although I do have one huge gripe, Philly Cheese Steaks have got to be the most overrated food item I have ever experienced. I went to Geno's, Pats, some bar, and this place in the front of the Reading terminal. Did I miss the spot?

Yes, you went to a bunch of tourist traps, probably much like going to Dreamland. Philadelphia is a world class restaurant city that offers far more than cheesesteaks, so if that was the extent of your culinary adventures in Philly, you missed out.

Some people just don't like them. The quality also varies at Pat's and Geno's. I had a steak at Pat's last week and both my girlfriend and I noted how much better it was than the last time we went.

Lots of other foods (hoagies, scrapple, pork roll, water ice) and restaurants make Philly a great food city

I'm not a big fan of Pat's or Geno's. As JHG mentioned they are tourist traps at heart. Inside Reading Terminal Market is DiNic's. I actually prefer their roast pork (with brocolli rabe, provolone and roasted red peppers) sandwhich, but they do have good cheesesteaks. Campo's further east on Market Street from RTM and the convention center has good cheesesteaks IMO. Tony Luke's is another good option as well. So yes you got burned by going to some fairly mediocre places IMO.

Dreamland is actually pretty good if you catch the one in Birmingham. The others are meh...tourist traps like you say. But I had a few other places, the best food I had was at the McCormick Restaurant.

I would have loved to but unfortunately the Mariott was a huge money trap. I refused to pay 20$ a night for WIFI in my room.

McCormick and Schmick's is a chain.

A lot of people like it, but Tony Luke's blows

Philly cheese steaks are one of the most unhealthful fast foods you could possibly order. Take a cholesterol injection instead and by-pass the middle man. Philly has a ton of great restaurants. No one should waste their time or money on a cheese steak, 'wit or witout.'

Eat what you want while in Philly. You don't have to eat cheesesteaks. I actually had a very good one from IHOP of all places. Essentially it's just a steak sandwhich on a roll with cheese ...

That's why 99% of the time I get them with chicken.

I love Shank's on Columbus Blvd. As stated above, Pat's and Geno's are pretty overrated.

Paesano's makes the best (cheap) sandwiches in Philly.
