Congrats to the ladies of Torque who won the DIII National Ultimate Frisbee Championship, including two who skipped graduation to be there.

Was not aware there was a National Ultimate Frisbee Championship - do they get any scholarship money?

It's D-III ... so surely no athletic scholarships.

I'm sure the Horns or Ags could scrounge up a car or two for a promising Ultimate Frisbee prospect.03-lmfao

The vast majority of intercollegiate championships are contested between non-scholarship athletes.

I suspect the D-III there does not mean the same as NCAA D-III. [ETA, for cycling, at least 20 years ago, the two divisions were for schools > 10,000 students and < 10,000 students; though schools and riders in the second division qualified for victory in the first division.]

But it's a club sport, so no.

Tex is almost certainly correct. Most sports organizations that offer national championships group their member schools into various divisions, and the NCAA is no exception. The division structures in different organizations are similar in concept but not formally related.

For example, when Rice went to the National Club Baseball Association championship in 2011, the Owls competed in Division II:

USA Ultimate is this country's "national governing body for the sport of Ultimate" ... they seem to have dropped "Frisbee."

Its "college guidelines" say that schools with fewer than 7,500 enrolled students can compete in the D-III regionals/championship (See: III, B, 5, a). But it sounds like competing in the other division -- called D-I -- is open to those small schools who choose/want to, instead.

Here's a link to the website for this year's D-III championship tournament, with scores: http://play.usaultimate.org/events/USA-U...pionships/

The Wham-O Corporation owns the trademark "Frisbee" and presumably doesn't want their mark to become generic.

And you have to admit: "The Wham-O Corporation" is a pretty fun phrase.

From my limited exposure to Ultimate culture, there's a lot of antagonism toward Wham-O. I think they may have engaged in some sort of action against use of the word "Frisbee" as George alludes to, but now the tables have turned; ultimate players do not use that brand of discs, and the object is always called a "disc".
