The "perfect" Power 5 opponent for each ACC school
Here's my list of the so-called "perfect" opponents from a power 5 league for each ACC school. It's a mix of current rivalries and ideas for news one to begin.

So who would make the perfect ‘power-5′ conference opponent for every ACC school? Let’s take a look….

Boston College: Rutgers. It doesn’t take much to get a little northeast New England hate going.

Clemson: South Carolina. The Gamecocks have gotten the best of the Tigers recently.

Duke: Northwestern. In a battle of well known academic schools, the Blue Devils have been the better program lately.

Thoughts?

Va Tech - Tennessee seems a natural to me. Pitt - WVU as well, but WVU may have burned too many bridges. Penn State's a good substitute, but I'm not sure that happens, either.

I really can't think of anybody for either Carolina or NC State, since South Carolina is already spoken for. Wake - Vandy is a series I'd like to see brought back. And clearly, UVa - Maryland makes a lot of sense.

Purdue, and Auburn are NC State's three closest ooc analogs all three are land grants, both are not considered the top school in their State. (UM-College Park is separate from the UM that holds all the professional schools) Maryland should have been a perfect ooc for NC State or UNC, however NC State and UNC will not play football against Maryland in our lifetime unless it's a bowl.

Auburn probably does not want an ACC rival. Purdue is the "logical" choice. But logic in this game is in short supply. UNC's perfect P-5 would be Indiana or Illinois.

Pitt and Penn State have a four game series coming up in the next couple of years. Pitt can easily oscillate between the two, and even agree to play them in DC. Same for WVa and VT. Tennessee will not agree to a regular ACC opponent.

Rutgers isn't in New England. New England is Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

My opinion...

Boston College - Connecticut
Duke - Stanford
Miami - USC
NC State - East Carolina
North Carolina - Texas
Syracuse - West Virginia
Virginia - Maryland
Virginia Tech - Tennessee

Givens...

Clemson - South Carolina
Florida State - Florida
Georgia Tech - Georgia
Louisville - Kentucky
Pitt - Penn State
Wake Forest - Vanderbilt

Since reading power-5 twice in his post didn't register with me.

I like all of those except UNC Texas. What the hell do they have in common. I would say UNC Kentucky and maybe pair Miami with Alabama or Auburn. Lump the biggest cheaters of all time together.

Actually, Purdue and Indiana were the only two I could think of for the NC schools. Neither has any history or affinity with the NC schools except possibly in basketball. But they have this going for them - neither of those schools have a logical P5 OOC opponent, either. So pitting them against UNC and State could work. Maybe alternate them, so it's a different NC vs Indiana state challenge every year.

That leaves me with:

Boston College - Rutgers
Syracuse - West Virginia
Pitt - Penn State
Louisville - Kentucky
Virginia - Maryland
Va Tech - Tennessee
UNC - Indiana/Purdue (alternate)
NC State - Purdue/Indiana (alternate
Duke - Northwestern/Vandy (alternate)
Wake - Vandy/Northwestern (alternate)
Clemson - South Carolina
Ga Tech - Georgia
Florida State - Florida
Miami - Florida

The last one assumes both leagues stay at 8 conference games.

Boston College: Rutgers. Or Maryland or Cincinnati (if it get gets to P5 status)

Clemson: South Carolina.

Duke: Northwestern. or Vandy or Stanford or Tulane (If elevated to P5)

Florida State: Florida.

Georgia Tech: Georgia.

Louisville: Kentucky.

Miami: Nebraska. or Oklahoma or USC

North Carolina: Tennessee. or Michigan

NC State: Mississippi State. or WVU

Pittsburgh: Penn State. or WVU

Syracuse: Maryland. or Rutgers or Penn State

Virginia: UCLA. Tennessee

Virginia Tech: West Virginia. TAMU

Wake Forest: Vanderbilt. Northwestern or Tulane (If elevated to P5)

I was thinking the same thing about The U and USC being a cool OOC game I'd love to see. Whatever Florida schools do, please don't schedule Ohio State anymore. Keep Urban out of the Sunshine State.

Also, in like VT against UT more than WVU. Although I'd love to see Pitt and even us play the Islandeers again.

I'd also like to see FSU against Texas. Good way to start a relationship with Texas in case they want a similar arrangement as Notre Dame one day. Wouldn't be my best case scenario, but I don't hate any idea the effectively kills the Big 12.

I left the schools with traditional OOC rivals alone: Clemson, FSU, Louisville, etc...if FSU wants to play UT that would be a great game...throw in Miami continuing to play Florida.

I'm in the South now and I'm blown away by how many people think "New England" is just a cute nickname for the entire Northeast.

Boston College is the hardest one to pair up, IMO. The most natural match of course is Notre Dame, but with them off the table for now, who else? Here are the criteria for a BC permanent rival (IMO):
* should be a private school
* ideally should also be a religious-based school
* should be as close to BC as possible

So, who fits the bill besides Notre Dame?

- Brigham Young would've been good, but they don't count as P5
- Northwestern, Vanderbilt are privates but that's about it.
- USC and Stanford aren't bad either, if you don't mind 2,000 mile away games.
- Baylor and TCU are private and religious - 2 out of 3 ain't bad

Between Baylor (Waco, TX) and TCU (Ft Worth, TX), I'm going with TCU. What do you think, Eagles fans? If you want close, take Rutgers.

Remind me again - why does every ACC team need to have a "perfect" P5 opponent? If you don't have one that makes obvious sense, wouldn't playing a wide variety of P5 opponents be more fun?

I like the NCST playing Indiana. I could see Miami and Oklahoma as a great matchup. BC and Rutgers pairs old NE Football powers together. I still would love a return of the Backyard Brawl as that was one of My all-time favorite matchups even before Our Big East and ACC involvement. I go with WVU and Pitt.

I totally get Penn State. That makes 3 teams - BC, Syracuse, and most of all Pitt - who consider Penn State to be a big rival.

The fact that he lists USC and Stanford near the top is interesting and makes the whole [semi-]permanent rival thing plausible. In a way it could create a BC / Notre Dame / USC / Stanford dynamic (in time).
