Boone is a great college town - Appalachian State - if you get a chance check out the beautiful campus. Try the Mellow Mushroom for some great craft beers and stone fired pizza!

Check out the "old time" Mast General Store for cool mountain merchandise and "classic barrel full candies". I like the one better in Valle Crucis (about 17 minutes from Boone)

You've got the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby that has some awesome views and plenty of pull-off stops and access to trails. Depending on the time of year, there are a variety of special events and attractions along the trek.

A few years back my family did some great hiking around Julian Price Memorial Park and Grandfather Mountain has some great views and a mile-high bridge at the top.

Depending on time...

Grandfather Mountain is cool.

Chimney Rock is cool. Nice trail at the top.

Linville Cavers are pretty cool to check out.

Personally, I enjoy the Tweetsie Railroad.

The best time to go to Grandfather Mountain would be early July.

RE: questions about north carolina
we ended up just drinking. drinking and camping. drank at appalachian brewery and boone saloon. and murphy's. boone was a cool town, though being a holiday weekend, lots of people downtown, though not any tourists in the bars. that was fine by us. good coffee at bald guy roasters and ate some bagels at that bagel joint. forget the place we camped, but it was off meat camp
