It has always been Cincinnati, if BYU is added. 07-coffee3

Well you could get their BBall without their FB, that might have some limited appeal, though the overhead of Olympic sports would seem likely to offset that appeal.

The problem is that the way Division 1 is put together guarantees that there are Olympic-sports only conferences including BBall, Olympic sports excluding BBall would have to be sport by sport affiliation agreements.

I have zero insider information on any of this, but that sounds likely to me.

According to McMurphy, BYU has a good reputation nationally but NOT being part of the P5 league, the gap is huge. The gap continues to grow. If Big Ten goes to 16, simply staying status quo the Big 12 has no invcentive to expand. Best thing they can hope for is the Big Ten goes to 16.

The P5 sound hell bent on locking out everyone.

RE: BYU's Holmoe: Another realignment shift is coming
If BYU is now motivated to make a move and it turns out that the Big 12 will not make a deal with them, is BYU powerful enough in college athletics to be the one to bring a new conference into being? One that would bring in the strongest available and leave the mediocre out? Kind of like the fantasy league being discussed in another thread.

If BYU wanted to do this would BSU, SDSU, Fresno St, AFA, UNLV, SMU, Houston and a few others accept that phone call?

Nope, new conferences have to wait 5 years before getting an automatic invite to the NCAA tourney. BYU isn't that powerful.

The right lineup would not have to worry about that.

RE: BYU's Holmoe: Another realignment shift is coming
I have always thought the Big 12 was not done and just biding their time. I think the end game will be this...

West...BYU and Air Force
East...Cincy and UConn

They move to the Big 14 and compete with the other P5. It really expands their territory and makes the West Virginia add seem much more sound. If I was throwing out a prediction as to when...I'd say by 2020.

McMurphy is pretty sure that IF the Big 12 makes a move, that it would be east. He point blank says this. But the Big 12 won't make such a move until the Big Ten goes to 16. However the Big Ten is on record thru MSU that they are not expanding. So BYU really might be out of luck.

And surmising that if the Big 12 went east, only schools making any geographic sense are Cincy, UCF and USF.

I guess UConn and BYU would both be at least a thousand miles away from Texas. UConn is already playing in Texas anyway in all sports.

BYU and its fans are going to have to come to grips with the reality that they're on the wrong side of the have/have-not divide and they're not in a position to do much about it. It may not be fair but the realignment game isn't played on a level playing field.

Amen to that. For better or worse, the B12 will ride its 10 team horse. There is no team out there available to B12 which would increase payout per B12 school.

Currently, the Big 12 is the only conference without a title game. It's also the league with the most room to grow.

Tom Holmoe has suggested that another realignment shift could be coming; I presume he is working hard to find a way for BYU to be involved.

https://twitter.com/gregwrubell

I reached out to a NATIONAL writer regarding this news and asked about BYU, and in turn I was told if he had to guess, what he called "the little engine that could" would be equally the one to watch. That was a reference to Cincy, Santa, and how they have come to be looked at in realignment.

Suggested? Could be? If he had to guess?

Ah, how some of you refuse to recognize the "little engine that could". NIU that is. If the Big 12 goes to 14, then Cincy, NIU, BYU, and one more get in. NIU brings the Chicago TV market which outweighs many other things the others bring. Don't count out the Huskies.

RE: BYU's Holmoe: Another realignment shift is coming
I just read some of these tweets and he said byu could join as a football only tomorrow. He must be referring to either the mwc or AAC and not the big 12.... I think BYU probably would join the AAC over the MWC. ANother take is maybe the ACC in denying BYU is hoping BYU to the big 12 happens thus the big 12 doesn't go all east with expansion. Obviously, the acc doesn't want to lose any members to the big 12, doubt that happens but i'm sure they don't want the big 12 to invite ECU, USF or UCF. They probably would prefer uconn stay out too but probably don't care much about cincy going to the big 12 along with byu.

I think the point he is making is that unlike other schools BYU is not in a conference with a waiting period before they could join another conference (ie. I think the American is 27 mos.~~ although that could be remedied by a settlement ala WVU). BYU could join immediately.

Yes, despite the misleading subject line, Holmoe is not claiming to be making any definitive predictions.

And, indeed, even if talks were "advancing", there's no definitive predictions to be made until very late in the process. There have been a number of moves that have got fairly far into the negotiating process without actually ever taking place. So making premature definitive predictions is something best left to the discussion in sports forums.

If the Big 10 expands to 16, it will most likely take Kansas. That would leave 3 holes in the Big 12.
